Just three days away from the 121st edition of the Big Game slated for this Saturday at 4:30 in Memorial Stadium, the Bears took to to the field to prepare for one of the nation's oldest and most storied rivalries.

Coach Wilcox, Coach DeRuyter, and linebacker Jordan Kunasyzk address the media after practice today.

HC Justin Wilcox

  • On how practice was on big game week: “Yesterday was a really good work day, today same thing. today is our situational day, and guys are running and getting a good sweat in.”
  • On watching Standford and what jumps out: “The skill on offense, the RB’s, Bryce Love is a phenomenal player and the other back is talented as well. The o-line and quarterback are playing at a high level. Their size at wideout and tight end and the way they use that matchup to their advantage. They can make plays in a lot of different ways... Across the board, they are just really good.”
  • On playing against bigger wideouts: “They just stretch all week….Their certain things you do with how you play certain routes, where you are at on the field, and your eyes. IF you play with your eyes to the man all day, they will throw it away from leverage and the QB jump balls it.”
  • On Stanford’s Quarterback: “Accuracy, he knows where to go with the ball and where he puts it. They throw what people would call a 50-50 ball, but it isn’t a 50-50 ball because of his placement and the length of the guys catching it.”
  • On if the guys are getting a little up for the big game: “Everyone appreciates the rivalry, its one of the greatest rivalries in college football, so I want them to enjoy that, and appreciate it, and how much energy it brings. Then its, can you harness that energy in the right place, and bring it to practice and take it to the game in the right way.”
  • On how the injuries to the wideouts are: “We are getting to where a lot of them are game time. I am hopeful they are playing, they are doing everything they can do to play, and if they can, we are going to put them out there and let it rip.’

LB Jordan Kunaszyk

  • On his memories of the big game: “On the ones I have played in haven’t been that great of memories because we haven’t ended up on the right side of the scoreboard… I am excited to play in it, and I know we are ready for it. We are ready for the challenge and we are going to be smiling a lot after the game, no doubt in my mind.”
  • On the feeling in the locker room about the big game: It’s a lot to play for still, we haven’t beat Stanford in a long time, and none of us on the team have. It is one of the teams I haven’t beat in the Pac-12 since I have been here so, put all that aside, it's just the next game, and we will be ready for it.”
  • On beating USC: Right after the game it was really exciting. I couldn’t stop saying the word awesome, because thas how I felt.. It was nice to reflect after the game, but we knew we had to flush it and move on to Stanford.”
  • On playing on this unit now compared to 2016: “it’s the standard, its what we expect. We put in a lot of time in the offseason not only with the SC staff but working with each other…The energy is great, and the overall team and the culture have changed. Things are different here at Cal now.”

DC Tim DeRuyter

  • On what they do to stay sharp without live tackling: “We still do tackling drills. Guys have to understand angles to the football, and I think we have done a much better job of that even compared to last year. We just don’t have that collision and finish, but we try to simulate it but they do have to take down the one man sleds, and they actually have to take those down to the ground opposed to a body where you might get injured.”
  • On which Bryce Love they will be expecting: “We know when he is the way he is he is a very dangerous back, and #19. They have a bunch of trees out there, they must have been great basketball players because they know how to post up.”
  • On what is the most important thing he sees at TAMU or here: “Its buy-in. It's guys buying into how we teach tackling and guys chasing the ball and playing hard.”

I thought Coach WIlcox was totally relaxed today. He was funny and in a good mood. I like that!
