I am pleased to report that earlier this week Ron Rivera hosted a news conference where he said that he now has full operational control of the football program. My understanding is that Ron will now be in a position to oversee everything from our budget to coaching to marketing to facilities management to medical staff to player attraction and retention.

While the exact reporting lines remain complicated, the substantive issues have been resolved and we are already starting to see real changes being implemented. I understand that one of Ron's first orders of business was to revise some decisions relating to the student meal plans and supplement funds being spent in that area. Other administrative issues are being addressed as we speak. There are a lot of smiles in Memorial Stadium at the moment.

I would like to thank Ron for taking on this challenge and Chancellor Lyons for the vision required to bring this to reality. Make no mistake, this is a gutsy and innovative move on the Chancellor's part. It acknowledges that college football now requires professional managers who understand the sport in order to maximize football's critical role in serving as the front porch of the University. It is hard to imagine anyone being better suited to this task at this moment in time than Ron Rivera and we are blessed to have him with us.

To celebrate this milestone, Coach Wilcox, Ron Rivera, and myself are joining together and launching the $1m #RonHasTheKeys Challenge Grant (note, Cal will almost certainly not call it that, but I will). We are collectively contributing $500k from the three of us (that's together, not individually this "hobby" has not been kind to yours truly's net worth over the past three years) and challenging our fanbase to celebrate this moment by helping us raise $1m (or more). This money will be going directly to Cal (NOT the California Legends Collective) and so will be fully tax deductible. These funds should go a long way to helping Cal field a championship caliber team in this critical year.

Those of you interested in helping celebrate Ron's elevation can use the following link:

https://crowdfund.berkeley.edu/project/46361

Alternatively you can email Adam Brooks at atbrooks@berkeley.edu. He can help answer questions about how the funds are being directed and allocated (an issue I've spent A LOT of time on myself. I've been assured these funds are being handled appropriately through Caliber).

Some of you are undoubtedly asking yourselves what this means for these last few days of the portal. Having spoken with virtually every player who has left and most who have decided to stay, suffice it to say that we and the players all want the same thing; namely for Cal to be able to put a winning team on the field this fall. I've long argued that we fans need to be shown that Cal is serious about creating a winning program. Our support has frankly been taken for granted for far too long. Well the players want Cal to have a winning program every bit as much as we do, and probably more. If they are convinced that we are pulling out all the stops and show some strong progress then we can both retain the talent we need and attract new players to finish out the roster. Some very encouraging on that front have come in already. This hopefully sets Cal up for a very special season.

The first step (or honestly maybe just the next step for many of us) is putting our money where our mouths are. We wanted Ron to have the keys. Well he now has them. Time to show this was more than just talk on our part. Time to show the players, each other and indeed the country that we are a sleeping giant no longer. We have awoken and we are ready to win.

Please join coach Wilcox, GM Ron Rivera and myself in helping make the dream of a Cal football championship program a reality. Reach out to Adam Brooks atbrooks@berkeley.edu or hit this link https://crowdfund.berkeley.edu/project/46361 if you can help.

Since it's tax deductible, is there any way to donate through a donor advised fund like Fidelity Charitable? I couldn't find any relevant listing there.

Why is this a gofundme instead of Cal Legends?

Is Cal Legends shutdown now?

I assume this is only for FB?

It's not gofundme per se (which sounds like we're trying to fund our kids orthodontia). It's just a company (crowdfund) that allows organizations to track these campaigns.

There are issues (still) with university employees donating to 3rd party collectives. You've probably seen a dozen or more examples of head football coaches donating to the school itself to help fund NIL. Gundy and Brian Kelly and Norvell, etc. This campaign has nothing to do with the existence of the Collective. And remember as I've pointed out a dozen times plus, Cal needs to fundraise $9m or more to fund its own NIL obligations. This is in furtherance of that goal.

Yes it is for football.

Thanks so much to all of you who participated in this campaign. We broke the record for the single largest crowdfunding effort at Cal. More than doubled it. And we aren't done yet. A few major donors came in late who aren't Included in these numbers so we are currently evaluating how to best use those to hopefully galvanize even more support.

Odds are that we are looking at the final weeks of the unrestrained 3rd party NIL era (thank God) once some version of the House settlement goes into effect so schools and collectives are going all in right now resulting in insane levels of competition for hIgh-impact players. Cal is right now going toe-to-toe with some of the more well capitalized programs in the country and scoring some big wins, but you don't win wars without bullets and in 2025 you don't win recruiting battles without money.

Thanks to all of you who gave so generously to help celebrate Ron getting the keys. An amazing and welcome outpouring of support from our community.

When Lyons made his first announcement about hiring Ron, I said that Ron was unofficially "being given the keys" and that it was just a matter of time before this became official.
Nevertheless I am very happy that it is now official. And I want to thank you Sabasta and everyone working with you for your dedicated efforts in both time and money that made it a reality.

I know there still remains a lot to be done. But at present every Cal football fan owes you and your compatriots a debt of gratitude for saving (I hope) Cal football.

The way it's worded is a bit confusing.

So far we have raised $911K.

So do we add the original $500K match, and the additional $500K match for a total of $1.911M?

911k to match 911k donated would add to 1.822mil. With two days left, I'd expect the drive to get to the full 1 million.

We agree on the calculation principle. For $1M raised we get $1M match for a total of $2M.

Does this mean Cal can afford to fire Knowlton, what . . . 16 months sooner? It would have the greatest impact on the entire AD.

I don't think we have to accelerate Knowlton's payments as a lump sum. If Knowlton was just sent home to Colorado with Cal sending him his (monthly?) checks and someone else took over, say Andrew McGraw, Amy Trask, Ron Rivera or another qualified alum, the only cost is the additional cost of the new AD above what we are already paying them. Moreovrr, I don't think we should be paying our AD $1.3 million a year and I think McGraw or Rivera might easily take the job for maybe $100,000 more than their current compensation. The same logic applies to Rivera as head coach. All the pieces are there to make this happen for much less than some are claiming it would cost.

I've heard of hometown discounts, but why would Rivera accept $4M less than Wilcox to be the head coach?

Why is he accepting even less to be GM? And has been donating the money he makes to Cal and Cal Legends?

You don't understand why wealthy Cal alums donate their time and money to Cal football?
