They played Winterland but I was too young to go (13 or 14).

Clapton's next band Blind Faith with Cream drummer Ginger Baker and Traffic's Steve Winwood, vocals and keyboards and Ric Grech on bass.

…but Clapton's next band, Derek and the Dominos was my favorite:

…and Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is one of the best Rock albums of all time because Clapton invited Duane Allman to play with them.

I know this thread is about the sound, but wow, Johnny Cash (introducing Derek and the Dominos) is, like, wearing the "puffy shirt" from Seinfeld and I bet he wasn't wearing that at Folsom or San Quentin.

Good call. I saw the Puffy Shirt in the Smithsonian in 2006.

This is another bit from the same Cash TV show. Carl Perkins was one of George Harrison's big influences:

…..and 15 years after that Cash TV show, Carl, George and Eric (Ringo, etc)

If you can get past that it's a Neil Young rip-off (probably intentionally), the ending lyrics of the first verse are freaking hilarious.

Speaking of Neil Young rip-off's, in 1972, Neil's father called him and told him that he really liked his new song on the radio, A Horse with No Name….

….and to add insult to injury, that same year, the song knocked Neil Young's song, Heart of Gold, out of the # 1 slot on the U.S. Pop Chart.

….and don't even get me started on The Knickerbockers ripping off the Beatles with their song Lies in 1965.

The guys in America were probably aware it was a bite. It was just too good of a song to walk away from.

You called it:

"I know that virtually everyone, on first hearing, assumed it was Neil", Bunnell said. "I never fully shied away from the fact that I was inspired by him. I think it's in the structure of the song as much as in the tone of his voice."

In Sept. 1982, I saw Michael McDonald perform the songs from the album from which that song came (his first solo album, If That's What It Takes, released, August, 1982) at a casino in Tahoe. In his band were Willie Weeks on bass, Robben Ford on lead guitar, and Edgar Winter on keyboards and sax. They blew the roof off the place. It remains among one of the best concerts I ever attended….and luckily, in the smallest venue.

I saw Louis Armstrong at age 10 (Berkeley Community Theater). That is my biggest concert accomplishment. I saw the Best Jazz Musician All Time.
He was touring in support of his Hello Dolly! single.*

* "His version reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, ending the Beatles' streak of 3 chart-topping hits in a row over 14 consecutive weeks. "Hello Dolly!" became the most successful single of Armstrong's career, followed by a Gold-selling album of the same name.
Hello, Dolly!" won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1965, and Armstrong received a Grammy for Best Vocal Performance, Male."
