Every year, at a certain point, the Mid-American conference plays a good chuck, if not all of their games, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Nobody cares, but it still makes me curious as to why. Here are some potential tongue and cheek reasons which you can add to:

  • The players want to stay home on Saturdays so they can see how football should be played.
  • If they don't play football on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, they'd have to attend class.
  • They never learned the days of the week and so are confused about when to play their games.
  • They play their games right after the rankings come out because it gives them an excuse as to why they aren't ranked.

For the record, I'd still like to know the real reason, but feel free to have fun with this.

Cash and publicity…

Dollars from ESPN
The only football game on TV on that day

Would we know about MACtion if there was not November mid-week football from the Midwest?

Some numbers for you from 2019 (the last time there was mid-week MACtion)…

Tues. Nov 12 Western Michigan v. Ohio. 338,000 viewers
Wed. Nov 13 No. Illinois v. Toledo 347,000 viewers
Sat. Nov 16 USC v. Cal. 551,000 viewers

ESPN wouldn't carry MAC games when the major conferences also have them. This way the MAC gets a national broadcast.

Maybe the Pac-12 should try it.

We seem to be headed there anyway...

Thanks for the answers. It really didn't occur to me that folks would actually watch MAC football on Tuesday and Wednesday nights over other prime time shows. But, now that you explained it, it makes sense.
