Madden used to tell great stories of growing up in Daly City with best friend John Robinson and the two of them regularly making their way to Berkeley to watch Cal games from Tightwad Hill.

He certainly was the same guy. There was never anything phony about him. It was all out there. One thing he told me was that even as a Super Bowl-winning coach he was not that well-known nationally. He could walk the streets of New York or Chicago and no one would recognize him. Then came the beer commercials. "I can't go anywhere now," he told me.Big C said:
Great story, David. When my family would go "out to dinner", we'd start at the Bow and Bell (I'd have a "Roy Rodgers") and then we'd go to the Sea Wolf for dinner. This was a few years before the "John Madden Era".
Can you confirm that he was pretty much the same guy in private, as his public persona? Because he didn't seem to be the least bit phony... actually, if you cannot confirm that, just don't reply (as this is sort of his "memorial thread").
When my kids were in grammar school we listened to his show on the way. They were always fascinated by Turduckin.79 Bear said:
Madden was a keen observer and a tremendous communicator of what he observed. I used to tune in to KNBR on my morning commute at just the right time (8:15 I think) to hear his latest take on whatever was of interest to him. On one show the host asked about a story involving a dog that could do something remarkable like catch a football or some such thing. Madden's response was classic. He said, "You can teach a dog just about anything, except not to shake himself when he gets out of the water."
He added so much fun to football, including a few words that I hope end up in the dictionary some day, like "doink" and "Turducken" (which he did not invent, but made famous nonetheless).
RIP Coach Madden.
