Had Raider season tix from 1970 thru 1981. What a joy it was watching him on the sidelines!!

Why was he taped to the turf? Was it some kind of prank?

I still kick myself for not signing up for the UC extension course John Madden taught titled something like "How to watch football". My sister offered me a choice of that or something else that I no longer remember. I chose the something else and figured I'd take Madden's course the next time he offered it. Unfortunately, there was no next time because a few months later CBS hired Madden to do NFL games and the rest is history.

Between 1971-75, the Raiders played 8 games against 7 different teams in Memorial. They were 7-1 in Memorial.

My Dad invited me to see Madden speak at Wheeler (dad received invite as original GBAF member) - he went & said it was in top 5 of best lectures he ever heard including his years a student at Cal '48-'51. He said Madden's impact as speaker was unreal. Seeing the Raiders play at Memorial Stadium that many times was also unreal. The place was AWESOME filled with 65,000 fans in silver & Black!!

I was a silent member of a conversation with John Madden twice:

1. In 1983 I went to the Crosby golf tourney at Pebble Beach with my buddy, Dan Medlin, who played for Madden (he was on the '77 Raiders team that beat the Vikings in Super Bowl XI at the Rose Bowl). As we were walking to the course, Madden was on the balcony of his room at the Lodge and yelled "Hey Danny!" We stood under his 2nd floor balcony and Dan had a nice conversation with his former coach;

2. About 20 years ago I was in Carmel with my wife, kids and father in law. We were walking around town and saw Madden holding court in the street by the restaurant he then owned, Katy's Place. My father in law got into a conversation with him. I just listened.

My takeaway from those encounters with the iconic Mr. Madden:

What a decent and nice man.

Madden used to tell great stories of growing up in Daly City with best friend John Robinson and the two of them regularly making their way to Berkeley to watch Cal games from Tightwad Hill.

It's kind of hard to picture big John climbing up Tightwad but cool story.

Wow, that would have been epic! According to Fox, this is a pic from the class:

i was very lucky, knew him both professionally and socially. I covered some Raider games and took some trips in 1977 and 1978 for the Chronicle. He always gave good quotes but did not suffer fools. He would not answer dumb questions (and I certainly asked my share) but he never talked in cliches.
He enjoyed talking and hanging out with writers, and his favorite was former Chronicle sportswriter Jack Smith, who was also a good friend of mine. I vividly recall one night, I think it was during an offseason minicamp. After the practice was over Madden left the film review to his assistants and joined Smith and me for a night on the town in Oakland. Jack London Square was a lively spot in those days and Smith wanted to start at the old Bow and Bell. Madden said he didn't want a place where he would be seen by so many Raider fans. "They'll just come over and say, 'Coach, you should have done this. Coach, you should have done that.;" But we convinced him We had been sitting at the bar for about half an hour and no one had so much as noticed him. He looked perplexed. "Don't these people know who I am?"
If they didn't then, they do now.

Great story, David. When my family would go "out to dinner", we'd start at the Bow and Bell (I'd have a "Roy Rodgers") and then we'd go to the Sea Wolf for dinner. This was a few years before the "John Madden Era".

Can you confirm that he was pretty much the same guy in private, as his public persona? Because he didn't seem to be the least bit phony... actually, if you cannot confirm that, just don't reply (as this is sort of his "memorial thread").

Madden was a keen observer and a tremendous communicator of what he observed. I used to tune in to KNBR on my morning commute at just the right time (8:15 I think) to hear his latest take on whatever was of interest to him. On one show the host asked about a story involving a dog that could do something remarkable like catch a football or some such thing. Madden's response was classic. He said, "You can teach a dog just about anything, except not to shake himself when he gets out of the water."

He added so much fun to football, including a few words that I hope end up in the dictionary some day, like "doink" and "Turducken" (which he did not invent, but made famous nonetheless).

RIP Coach Madden.

He certainly was the same guy. There was never anything phony about him. It was all out there. One thing he told me was that even as a Super Bowl-winning coach he was not that well-known nationally. He could walk the streets of New York or Chicago and no one would recognize him. Then came the beer commercials. "I can't go anywhere now," he told me.

When my kids were in grammar school we listened to his show on the way. They were always fascinated by Turduckin.

"The key to winning the game is to score more points than your opponent."

Might be paraphrased a bit but this is awfully close. The guy was a master of the obvious, but one of the greats nonetheless. RIP

John Madden story about Warpaint, the pinto horse mascot of the Kansas City Chiefs:

"Warpaint circled the field at the beginning of each game and after each touchdown. In a 1975 game against the Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs won 42-10 prompting Warpaint to circle the field for each of the Chiefs' six touchdowns. Raiders head coach John Madden, following the loss, quipped that "We couldn't beat the Chiefs, but we damn near killed their horse". Wikipedia

One particular Madden memory: In 1991 on a CBS 49ers broadcast from Candlestick Park, the camera panned over the top of the stadium toward the Oakland hills where the Tunnel Fire was just getting started. Madden deadpanned (but being from the East Bay, with a hint of concern in his voice) on the air during a break in the game, "there's a heck of a fire going on over there in Oakland". Just how a regular guy, not a talking head, would describe what he saw. That was the first notification I heard of the fire and disaster that was to come.
