Phil Knight is 84 years old.
Without him, does Nike continue to support Oregon - different than Nike supports any other university?
And without that Knight/Nike support, how competitive does Oregon stay and what media value does Oregon have?

So there are these things called ESTATES and FOUNDATIONS. I mean do we think Phil isn't going to put X hundreds of millions into a foundation whose expressed mission is to support excellence at the University of Oregon?

That's true, but Knight's involvement is worth a lot. There will certainly be a huge endowment but it certainly won't be the same without him pushing.

Exactly. It's "uncle Phil's" involvement, passion, and commitment to Oregon that is extremely valuable. Hell, he was cold calling the big10 commissioner and ADs trying to get Oregon an invitation into the big10

Stanford has a 38B endowment. Far larger than anything Oregon has. Furd just doesn't have the same passion, and doesn't have a sugar daddy who lives and breaths furd football.

Phil's son is a "rapper" and has a passion for many things that do not include sports. Once Phil is gone, the Oregon brand will start to diminish. Unfortunately for Oregon they don't have much intrinsic value. Oregon is not fertile recruiting ground, average academics, Eugene is tiny, not a long history of success, etc …

I didn't -- I would have attributed it!

It's not exactly my best insight ever, but it's true.

I vaguely recall reading something about him establishing a trust/fund for Oregon sports after he passes. Maybe somewhere on Canzano's site?

Yes, a foundation. But, it will do what foundations do - bureaucratize and do what is best for the admin of it, ie max salaries, protection of principle, safest investments.

UO will revert to mediocrity, to the B1G's dismay.

I do believe that uncle Phil will have established a sizable trust.
But I also agree that once he is gone the managers of the trust will not have (1) the same fire that he has nor (2) the same brilliance that he has.

(3) nor the same genius. They will go all corporate.

Stanford had John Arrillaga, not chopped liver. Helped fund over 200 projects, and personally supervised the rebuilding of Stanford Stadium in nine months, coming in under budget.

They also have Phil Knight after whom many of the GSB buildings are named.

Phil is like a pharaoh, when he dies he wants to take all his sh@it with him. He is going to fall on the plunger like Alec Guinness in Bridge on the River Kwai.

And they are administered with strict rules and guidance. Could be billions not millions

Phil Knights net worth in 2022 was almost at 42,2 billion. I wonder if the state would let Nike University then go private? And part of the managers of that portion of the trust would likely be the athletic department itself or the Oregon foundation

Did you see where he is having a second new indoor practice facility built for completion in 2024?

Construction will be funded entirely with private philanthropy and will be managed through the UO Foundation.

Stanford's billionaire donor alum, John Arrillaga (played on the basketball team, he brother played at Cal) passed this January. I don't know how much he left to Stanford. His daughter Laura Arrillaga-Andreesen (yes, married to the founder of Netscape) received all her multiple degrees from Stanford and has taught there. She will undoubtedly continue to support Stanford athletics among her many philanthropic endeavors, but she will not be the force that her father was.

Arillaga established a men basketball scholarship in honor of his brother. https://www.calathleticsfund.com/2021-22-honorific-scholarships

Completely unrelated, but I think those two nimrod Najarian brothers on CNBC did the same in honor of their dad (brother?) for football.
