Does anyone have a list of bars in San Francisco that prioritize showing Cal football games, preferably with sound?
Used to have a proper one in the Marina years back but that place shut down, and the alumni group has been dead for a while, so may be up to us local denizens to find a spot.chunkybear said:

That's sad that this is even a question. Why would they prioritize any other college game tomorrow afternoon? I can guarantee you any bar I walk into tomorrow afternoon in Seattle will have the Cougars on.
Well one problem is that a lot of bars have DIRECTV and you know what that means...fat_slice said:Heck, I live in Oakland and prefer to watch away games at home because I can't trust any sports bar putting us on the big screen with volume (I am tired of making phone calls and asking ).nwbear84 said:

The Bay Area is a terrible sports town, I'm surprised people don't realize it. The only people that give a damn are the midwestern transplants we get.
FIFY: "Dumb take. The Giants draw 30,000+ even when they're crappy. Warriors have always drawn crowds even prior to the Curry days. Is this a bad Cal sports town? Sure, but that's likely due to the lack of success in the last 150,000* years."westcoast101 said:golden sloth said:

Not just a dumb take. An absolutely STUPID take. The bay area is an excellent pro sports town! ie; Giants, 9ers, Warriors and even the Raiders! The proper comment is; unless team is winning, it is not a good COLLEGE sports town.
Actually, the Bay Area isn't great for spectator sports BECAUSE IT'S GREAT FOR PARTICIPATION SPORTS. Cyclists, runners, surfers, basketball, golf, adult soccer and volleyball leagues, etc. People on the West Coast, in general, are out doing things instead of sitting in front of a TV (or in a stadium) watching a game. This is reflected in differences in population obesity, average lifespan, etc.golden sloth said:

Anyone familiar with this bar in Oakland?
Technically, it was a number of years after the 49ers came to town (about mid 50s) as they were not very good for a long, long time but got into the 57 or 58 playoffs with Detroit...USF, St. Mary's, SCU outdrew the 9ers in the early 50s, then things changed.Dgoldnbaer said:
My dad used to tell me of the Big Game parades that existed on Shattuck avenue in the '30's & '40's (he grew up on Oak/Berkeley border & went to Cal 1948-1951) A big dent was put into it being huge college sports area when 49ers became team in '46. Then another when when Giants came here in '58, another one when Warriors came here in '62 and then again when the A's got here in '68. And this was same time the Raiders became one of, if not the best team in the NFL for a good 10+ years!
Right, there are many places that have fewer transplants than the Bay Area (or LA) and fewer pro sports teams. And if the NFL or NBA teams they do have are only rarely any good, even better for the college teams.eastcoastcal said:
Another reason why the bay area's such a professional sports market and not great for college is because theres very little homogeneity in where people went to school.
In the south/midwest a TON of people all go to the same state school or live in the area their entire lives & have relatives who go to the schools. Not the case with Cal/Furd.
