Umm... Mouse Davis is 90 years old. Is he up to the job these days? Also, while we have a deep group of wide receivers, I'm not sure the Run and Shoot has been a consistently successful strategy in general. However, it might make Musgrave's and Wilcox's heads explode, so there is that.

If their heads explode, we can get out of the 5 years remaining on the contact, right?

I don't necessarily have a contradiction, but more just a point of interest; one of the best offensive coaching trees in the country right now is heavily Run and Shoot-influenced, and that's all of the old Art Briles assistants. Briles was a HS coach in Texas in the 80's and 90's, when John Jenkins was running his version of the Shoot with the Houston Gamblers (USFL), and then at Houston with Andre Ware et al. Mouse Davis was also Jenkins' OC with the Gamblers in '84, with Jim Kelly at QB. Anyway, Briles' downfield passing game has a ton of Run and Shoot influence, and from him it's been passed on to:

-Josh Heupel (#1 offense in the country currently at Tennessee, top-10 offenses every year since 2017, with three different programs).
-Heupel got the Briles offense from Joe John Finley, TE coach with him when he was at Missouri and former Briles QC coach, and then from Jeff Lebby, who was Heupel's OC at UCF.
-Jeff Lebby (#6 offense in the country last year at Ole Miss, #20 now in his first year at Oklahoma).
-Lebby was at Baylor with Briles from 2008-2016.
-Kendal Briles (#18 offense this year at Arkansas).
-The name says it all, but a coach at Baylor from 2008-2016.

This is probably the most fun offensive school in the country right now, and nobody's truly figured out how to stop it over the last 10+ years.

I played in a run and shoot offense in HS taught by a disciple of Mouse (his world football league OC actually). I didn't know anyone knew who Mouse was or that he could still be coaching.

I was a 3rd string QB but only saw time on offense as a receiver. Maybe I should be our new OC?

Mouse killed it the year he was Cal's OC. It would be a perfect Cal move to hire him.

He only had a quarterback for one half of one game.

Gale Gilbert tore it up the first half of the A&M game, I think we were up 28 to something. Then Gilbert had his knee injury and the rest is history..... Davis was infamous for not figuring out how to incorporate All American Tight End David Lewis into the offense. Eventually Theder took back the reigns and they did some sort of hybrid....

I remember that A&M game all to well. For 30 minutes I thought Mouse was our savior. Then Gilbert goes down ... ended up being Theder's dead end as HC.
