I don't get down to Palo Alto very often, but if I'm there mid-afternoon, I always used to love going to Jonathon's Fish & Chips on Willow Road, in Menlo Park (the restaurant was run by the mother of Cal's former standout WR, Jonathon Makonnen). Some years ago, the store was closed up and they transitioned to a food truck (+catering). Today was the first time I was able to stop by there. I have no idea if the truck is still in the Makonnen family or not, but the fish and chips are still dam' good. Finding it may be a bit of a challenge though: one website put it Bay Road east of Pulgas (in East Palo Alto), and another on Weeks Street. Today I found it on Bay Road, but west of Pulgas (intersection of Demeter).

I used to go to the one close to the lower north side of campus in the 70's. Cheap fast food? Sure, but I loved it.

Now I only go to Captain Hook Fish and Chips:

It is Jonathan's, just like the receiver. I believe the owner is still his mother. The menu is the same. The food is still great. Just take Bay Road to the end and you will see it.

When I worked at Oscar's in the 70's, kids from H Salt Fish & Chips across the street would call and beg us to trade food. We always drove a hard bargain since our food was so much better and had variety--I mean they only had fried fish, fries and sodas, while we already had fries and sodas, but also steak sandwiches, cheese burgers, hot dogs, pies, cheese cake, and shakes. We also got paid better than them and had a great owner-boss. So it was usually a trade of a few of our coveted items for enough of their fish and chips for our whole crew.

I loved H. Salt Esquire. There was one in Rockidge that I used to go to after work. One in Alameda that I went to when I lived there. However, I haven't lived in the Bay Area for 40 years so maybe the memory of how good their fish and chips is clouded by time. Around 10 years or so ago I tracked down what could have been the last one, in Richmond. Not the cleanest of establishments and I don't remember if the food was as good as what I remembered. I'm wary about getting fish and chips if I'm not not familiar with the restaurant and/or haven't had them before as there can be varying levels of quality.

There are still a bunch of H. Salt locations in SoCal.

If bearister is tuned into this sad post it may get 1 more page than his hoops threads. I truly want to see a 1 page game thread.

There was one in North Hollywood, but they removed the "H. Salt" lettering, leaving only "Fish & Chips" signage.

Finally someone who remembers H.Salt Esq. I remember it being on Oxford near the West Gate crescent. But I might be wrong. In 1969-1970 my girlfriend (now wife) and I would frequent it and the Kentucky Beef shop, also near West Gate, and Giant Burger on Euclid for our daily dinner. Two starving students on a tight budget.
All three were a short walk from Doe library

There was another fish & chips place on the west side of Shattuck just a few store fronts north of University. Pretty authentic - you received your food wrapped in newspaper. That was my intro to fish & chips in the1960s when I was in Jr High. I'd recognize the name, but I don't recall it now. Just up the block, Triple Rock is still a go-to place for me when I'm in town.

Was H Salt the fish and chips joint on Shattuck, just north of University, a few doors up from Spat's?
