Except for the comment about water polo and its endowment/the other endowed sports and Title IX.

Also, lack of self-reflection about how s****y the local media's coverage of college supports has been as an overall contributor to both the lack of interest and the lack of accountability towards the various administrations. The mediocrity and failures have rarely if ever been called out by the local sportscasters.

How many exposs did they run on Larry's mismanagement and the presidents for letting him get away with it? How many stories from them on JK's mismanagement of the women's swimming program or Christ for renewing his contract?

Easy to point the finger when the house has fallen down around you.

Agreed.

But like this forum thats only interested in Football thats just not his audience.

Ive really enjoyed attending Cal water polo matches and will continue to do so this season, as they go for a magical NCAA 3 PEAT.

Yeah, the "hostess" -- let's hope her main job is not in local sports, or even part of the Bay Area community -- introduces Justin Wilcox as "the Cal State coach", emblematic of all our problems. Otherwise, Larry Biel summed it up pretty well, including a pretty good sad history of the past 10-15 years.

I've always liked Larry Biel's take on things and he did a good job of covering college sports.
I don't think the bay area media did a horrible job of covering college sports and I'm not sure the cost of doing an in depth investigative reporting piece on the problems with Larry Scott, the pac-12 presidents and Cal athletics would have been paid for in terms of increased readership because there would have been a lot of minutia there to thumb through.

It would have been perfect for the wall street journal and/or the NY Times or even Sports Illustrated. These days, the Athletic would have been well positioned to report on such matters, and maybe they will retroactively. But, in general, I don't think the media is at fault for what has happened to Cal and Stanford. I know that Cal brought this upon themselves to the point where I actually believe that some administrators are privately celebrating this disaster.

It boils down to 3 main problems + timing
  • The growing hegemony (monopolization) of college football by ESPN, the SEC and the B1G with the NCAA doing nothing to stop it--somebody should have filed an anti-trust lawsuit and/or changed the laws so that such a lawsuit is applicable but they didn't.
  • The presidents of the pac-12 schools made very bad hiring decision and those they hired made very bad media decisions based on the demand to bring in more than they could for each school
  • Cal doesn't care about athletics, especially revenue ones, enough to hire solid decision makers
  • Covid changed the economy and nobody feels financially wealthy enough to bail others out, creating a sink or swim environment, economically.

It's hard to say who wins the "worst decisions this century" contest between the pac-12 and Cal athletics. But combined it is not surprising it has led to this.

I share Larry's sadness that, after over a century, the conference had to implode like a Titan submersible. In both cases, arrogance and poor management at the top, victimized innocent people at the bottom and both have sunk to invisibility.

I'm glad there's a healthy dose of reality now. For the last year I felt like I was living in a bizarro alternate universe when coming to this board. People thought it was a foregone conclusion that we would either get $40M in PAC12 or quickly get invited to B1G just because of our academic prowess.

Yeah, the SUNSHINE PUMPING here was ridiculous.
It was right up there with the Cal Athletic Departments forecasted demand for PSL's at $250,000 each to help get the stadium built. Total pie in the sky!

The woman who introduced Biel wouldn't shut up. Heaven forbid she sticks around. Yeah, I caught her "Cal State" just before the commercial. Yesterday, I caught Joel Klatt and I thought he gave an excellent presentation of the history of the breakup of the Pac12. It goes all the way back to formation of the league with SC and UCLA supposed to receive higher shares of the revenue. Cal was probably also a former. Instead, as they brought in schools the revenue was shared equally. This is the first instance of offending dear old SC. The rest you know.

Not sure why people keep calling out the female anchor, Karina Nova.
She didnt grow up in the U.S. and emigrated from Azerbaijan. Went to Kent State.
She is irrelevant.

What is relevant is the fact that Larry Scott turned down a deal just 4 years ago by ESPN to take over the Pac-12 Networks distribution and forge a long-term partnership on Tier 1 rights.

That scenario would have mandated that the LA schools stay put.

And here we are.

I understand but I have heard that the commissioners were under pressure from the school presidents to produce a certain $ figure. And that wasn't forthcoming. I don't think Scott or George had the authority to over-ride the 12 presidents and/or act unilaterally.

Another possible factor is that maybe the commissioners were concerned about schools leaving for greener pastures if they didn't reach that dollar figure. It's a catch 22 for the commissioners, no?

I mean, once the pac-12 could not get the money for their schools that the other P5 conferences could, wasn't this all inevitable?

This is why I think the NCAA should have looked into the anti-trust angle. I mean all of this poaching smacks of that.

I recall hearing years ago (hearsay yes but completely believable) that SC had always wanted to find a way to get out of having to travel to Pullman freaking Washington to play a football game, and now they have, so that's good for them. Of course now they'll have to go to New Brunswick freaking New Jersey occasionally, but for a much bigger slice of the pie, so they can live with that I suppose.

One of the greatest experiences of my life was a road trip to Pullman in 1996. Of course, Barnes fumbled on the 2 yard line, and we proceeded to go 1-6 after that, but what matters here is, **** u$c.

Here's an article from today's Seattle Times: https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/pac-12/tracing-the-pac-12s-12-strategic-blunders-that-led-to-its-collapse/

"The collapse occurred over a 12-hour stretch on Friday but was, in fact, 12 years in the making 12 years of strategic miscalculations, 12 years of presidential arrogance, 12 years of missed opportunities, 12 years of wounds at once self-inflected and thrust upon the conference from afar.
Commissioner George Kliavkoff bears immense responsibility for the collapse, but not all of it. Not close to all of it.

Here's a 12-step path to destruction that began early last decade and continued through the extinction event this week..."

The article goes on to list the 12 steps to implosion...

Verbatim at 6:20:

"Well, let's listen to a, uh, sound bite that we have from the Cal State coach, I believe."

I'd call that VERY UNPROFESSIONAL for a Bay Area sports reporter to first, not even know the name of the school in question, and second, to not know the coach's name. He's only been at UC Berkeley for six and a half years, coaching the state's best public school against the state's best private school.

Who is she? Never seen her before.

I remember listening to that game on KGO. Oh, to have been there? Ouch.

Probably my best top 5 Cal experiences were:
5) 2004 Cal Memorial Season
4) 2007 Cal Tenn
3) 1991 Cal UW
2) 2003 Cal U$C
1) 1982 Big Game

I've been simply stupid lucky to have seen so much success in person.
Ironically, despite having tix & wanting to attend, I had to miss the 2007 Cal OSU game because of other responsibilities. My parents took my kids to watch Cal fall from their brief, but lofty heights. Dodged a bullet there.

I've avoided the carnage over the years in person. You, like many friends and family, have traveled far and wide to have their hearts broken. I feel for ya!
