I am thrilled to report that not only did the Cal community meet our challenge grant goal to collectively raise $1m for the California Legends Collective over the Labor Day weekend but they exceeded it! As a group we managed to raise over $1.2 million including matching funds for 21 sports in less than two full business days! You all are the best!!!

Let me take a minute to highlight what made this so incredible. First, as many of us who have been around charitable organizations know, challenges grants are usually highly scripted. By which I mean the vast majority of the money in a typical challenge grant is lined up to be donated before the challenge is even launched. Well not this one. Partially as the result of the chaos surrounding the ACC admission process and partially just because the Riveras, Lance Cooper and myself were inspired to come together to do this somewhat at the last minute, we didn't have a single dime in donations lined up before launch. In fact, we weren't sure if we were going to raise any money at all.

Over 1100 separate donations received in three days. 1100! Multiple people donating to multiple sports (often multiple times). Many of our most generous donors who have been instrumental in helping to fund our efforts to date coming in yet again with new major contributions. And several five figure checks from individuals who not only have not given to the Collective before but really have not donated to Cal athletics in any capacity before. It is so amazing and gratifying to start tapping in to this large portion of our alumni base, who clearly has the means but until recently has lacked the impetus to get involved. We are now seeing that change.

So thanks to Stephanie and Ron Rivera and Lance Cooper and to my wife for not divorcing me for helping fund this. With special thanks to the Riveras for using their large social media presence to help promote it. All of us are poorer this evening because of what the Cal community accomplished but we are all nevertheless delighted. The success of the challenge grant exceeded our wildest expectations.

Thanks as well to Justin Wilcox for smashing North Texas and Mark Madsen for being an indefatigable fundraising / coaching machine. And of course, all the other Cal coaches and administrative personnel who pitched in on behalf of the students.

But last, and most importantly, thanks to you all. You all did this. You were able to create a tremendous level of engagement incredibly quickly given the backdrop of an athletic department that has struggled in its revenue sports for far too long. As tradition and history seemingly crumbled around us, you were able to divorce yourselves from the negativity and embrace the opportunities this new world presented. You helped rebut the national narrative that Cal fans were disinterested in the success of their athletic department. You were able to show our new partners in the ACC that they made a wise business decision in looking through our recent struggles and focusing on our potential as both a premiere academic institution and a major athletics power. And you were able to conclusively prove that THE BEAR WILL NOT QUIT!!!

Go Bears!

Thank you doesn't begin to cover the gratitude for all that you and the crew have done to help rescue Cal football (& thereby all of athletics!) from the precipice, but thank you to you, the Riveras and Lance Cooper nonetheless! Thank you to everyone who stepped up this weekend and here's to getting the word out that THE BEAR WILL NOT QUIT! Awaken the giant! Go Bears!

This is simply awesome. What an amazing accomplishment.

Now we need to let the world know.

Is there some sort of "official" announcement that we can all share?

I sure hope both Cal Athletics and the master Cal account are blasting this out.

I can't begin to describe he roller coaster of emotions I've felt over the past month. There were some very, very dark days.

But I couldn't be happier where we ended up, and thank you doesn't convey enough of a feeling I have for Sebastabear and the other big donors who lead us to our current state. I happily pitched in my share, in no small part because of my trust in Sebastabear and the other large donors to make sure our contributions will not be in vein, and will go to directly fund needed holes.

Thank you to you, us and the entire extended Cal community. All three groups have restored my faith in the future of our beloved Cal Bears.

That is so awesome @sebastabear and the Riveras.

The outlook of Cal athletics has suddenly turned so positive: football and basketball talent through the portal and NIL, inclusion into the ACC, GMac being cancer free, and now great a matching funds campaign through Cal Legends. Things looked really bleak as recently as before Mad Dog was hired last spring. The trajectory looks promising now! Go Bears!

Assuming ~$700k ($1.2 million - the $500k matching) and ~1100 donors that means the average donation was ~$650. I am curious how that breaks down in number of people donating double/triple digits vs 5+ digits.

In general, it seems that we have done a great job at reaching out to the people donating $20k, but there are only so many people that are in a position to donate that much. What are the plans (if any) to try to get 1000 people to donate $20 each? Cal has a large alumni base and getting a large number of small donations can go a long way.

I know that's a tough shell to crack. Its hard to feel like your individual 20 dollar donation is going to make a big difference, but I bet you there are a lot of people who would like to help that can afford 20 dollars but cannot afford 4-5 figures. If we could figure this out it would guarantee a large number of consistent revenue stream that isn't as dependent on a small number of individuals going above and beyond.

The in-game donation feature that was floated in the other thread is the way to do it imho…
Basically add an ESPN gamecast type thing to the nil site or create an app.
When you see "Jaydn Ott rush for 27 yards and a first down" you hit a button corresponding to a small donation amount next to his name or next to an olineman name, etc." or Nate Burrell tfl hit a button and donate. I think I said that well enough.
Hopefully sebastabear listens and gets that one done.
I really think that would set us apart

I would add on to this the local businesses (bars, restaurants) that benefit from Cal game days. They stand to lose quite a bit of weight end up getting relegated so hopefully they realize this now and start chipping in.
