I believe the fire destroyed several homes built by Bernard Maybeck. In 1965, when I was around 10 years-old, we moved into a home in the Thousand Oaks area (north of where the fire occurred) that had been built in 1923. We bought the home from the original owner and he had installed plumbing in the attic and sprinklers that ran across the ridge of the roof.

I thought I saw Laurel and Hardy trying to move a piano out of a burning house.

Thank you for posting this. My Nana (paternal grandmother) was Cal 1927 and grew up in Berkeley, so she was doubtless there for that fire.

Fun fact - My Nana was also on the women's rifle team. Yes, Cal has shooting spots once upon a time.
