Not the most disappointing loss, the most embarrassing.

Vs the buffs we played down to their level then went below.

Today we were never even approaching their level.

There are endless possibilities here. Cal-USC 1994 is a standout. 61-0 loss. Total shyt show...Lots to choose from on the MBB side also. Remember the 101-50 loss to Stanford? I do. Also many uncompetitive losses against UofA.

The worst losses are the ones where you have hope for a great season prior to the game, and they are then dashed. Oregon state in 2006 or oregon in 2009 are at the top for me.

I've experienced so many hyper-depressing Cal football seasons and games, but the game that stands out to me as most depressing is when Cal threw 10 interceptions in one game in 1978, losing to UCLA 45-0.

I'd say the Arizona loss in '21. It was their only win that season they were down to a 3rd string QB and we lost and didn't even trust our backup when it was clear Glover couldn't get it done. We only put up 3 points. It was a failure of coaching, development, recruiting, and scouting and it kept us out of a bowl game and it was their only win that season.

That's why it's my pick, it was a complete debacle on every level with no redeeming silver linings. There's lots of other choices but that one was a complete gut punch to me where it was clear we had lost whatever pre-Covid momentum we had and that this coaching staff wasn't it.

Maybe it's recency bias because there have been lots of bad losses over the decades but that one still sticks with me as the most embarrassed I've ever been as a Cal fan

Arizona in 2021, we had excuses, last year against Colorado we had zero excuses.

Stanfurd was barely top 10 (11 coaches). Whipped us 63-13. A week after losing to Colorado 42-24 to give them their conference win.

Before that was 2007 Stanfurd. Sure they beat USC in possibly the luckiest game ever played. But they came in with three wins, and Cal was good, but thanks to coaching completely collapsed.

This was a shameful CAL loss and even more horrible of a game plan which squarely fits on Coach Wilcox shoulders no excuses! This is the 0regon Ducks not the 0hio State Buckeyes unbelievable!

How will CAL compete in the ACC when you cant even beat the 0regon Ducks! Something we all need to think about as CAL fans! The ACC cuts you no breaks tuff competition in a very tough Conference. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. G0 BEARS!

Cal vs. (F)UCLA, 1978 ("It's been years since ABC televised a Cal game and it'll be years until they do it again!")

Cal vs. U$C, early-mid '90s... somebody referenced it above

Cal vs, Furd 2013 (I spent some of the 2nd half curled up in the fetal position, under a bench at Furd)

Cal vs. Arizona 2021 (at least good that we didn't forfeit)

Cal vs. Colorado last season (How COULD we?!? ... death knell for the Wilcox program begins)

For the record. today's game doesn't make the list. Just another bad loss; nothing to write home about.

Cal vs USC, late Holmoe vs early Pete Carroll team trying to make a statement.

Too traumatized to look up what exact season or more details.

The Wilcox Cheez-it Bowl of 2018 was about as embarrassing as it gets. Would rather we weren't in a bowl game that year. Lost to TCU in overtime, 10-7, and looked awful. Many observers said it was easily the worst bowl game that year.

Isn't Gilby's USC debacle also the game where he blew Barnes' redshirt at halftime?

The worst losses ever should be extremely painful...The worst losses of the BI era should be ones where this board melts down.

I know this board melted down after 2006 Tennessee, so that was a historically bad loss. I forgot if it happened with 2007 Oregon State, but that is definitely up there.

But ...

Cal vs. Furd 2013: Uh, Cal historically sucked in 2013, so historically sucking in the Big Game shouldn't be up there.

I don't even remember Cal vs. Arizona 2021. I could look it up, but I'm not going to.

Cal vs. Colorado: Losses during the Wilcox era shouldn't count. In order for losses to be extremely painful, you have to have very high expectations that are shattered. I haven't had very high expectations under Wilcox, so the fall isn't that steep.

But without Snyder and whoever followed him, we wouldn't have gotten that magical season in 1996 when Cal had on its staff the future head coaches of 4 NFL teams.

Even Gladstone (winning crew coach) managed to land Tedford during his short stint at AD. Think about that.

Worst ever? ...hands down, October 13th, 2007

Cal vs Oregon St when the bonehead Kevin Riley reached deeped down into the recesses of dunderheadedness and tried to run against an OSU defense when all we needed was a field goal to go into overtime causing Tedford to snap his clipboard in half.

I can never forget standing on the field behind the endzone screaming for him to throw the ball out the back of the endzone...and then me starting to jump up and down maniacally waving my hands as I saw Riley tuck the ball and scramble toward his destiny with stupidity.

Two of those games stand out in my mind:
  • 1973 0-66 against Alabama. I listened to that game as I was assembling a Dynaco amplifier kit. Fortunately, there was little that happened on the broadcast to divert me from my project.
  • 1978 0-45 loss to UCLA. I was in grad school at UM and a friend invited several of us over. I'd talked up Rich Campbell all week . . .

I'll add one more:
  • 1966 0-24 loss TO SAN JOSE STATE!!!!!!!

EDIT - Personally, Cal's worst loss was when USC lost to UCLA in 1975 because it kept Cal out of the Rose Bowl.

The viewing of that game on TV precipitated a 2 hour drunken wrestling brawl in the hallway of my frat. We turned on each other. No blood. No broken bones.
