I am thinking of going to the game. Where do people usually stay for games there? Not much in terms of hotels available for that weekend. Is Columbus, GA seems to be a close enough option. Where are you guys flying in to? What's there to do in that area for the weekend?

Columbia GA seems like a decent option but we might just stay in Atlanta and do the 1-2 hr drive down for the game. Curious what others have in mind.

Atlanta to Auburn is 100 miles. If it's a night game, a bit of a tough drive back post-game, but you'd avoid paying whatever extortionist amounts hotels within 30 miles of Auburn get to charge for home football weekends.

Atlanta's got the MLK Jr. National Historic Park and the Buckhead bar scene, plus it might work out if the Falcons have a home game on the Sunday for a football Sat/Sun doubleheader, although the No Fun League doesn't do much for me.

I'm trying to figure this out also. Sounds like flying into ATL is the best option. I don't love ATL but there are some things to do there.

I did hear from a player's family at one of the practices that the team is staying in Montgomery, AL.

I'll be flying into Atlanta. I would not try to fly back out Saturday night though. If you fly in with people remember splitting an uber is a decent option too

Lodging wise going with an Airbnb in auburn.
Airbnbs aren't ubiquitous but they tend to be cheaper than hotels (and have more character)

Going to spend Friday/Saturday in Auburn, AirBnB will be a good 1K+ but so what

Staying in Atlanta and driving it in for the game. Really praying it's not a night game or it's going to be rough going... flying back Sunday for be ready for kids' school.

Anyone buy game tix yet?

Meeting my cousin (GT alum) in Atlanta, driving to Birmingham Friday to visit elderly uncle (retired UAB History prof) and hooking up with more cousins (a couple UAB and one Auburn alum). Caravan Saturday to Auburn (two hours), back to Birmingham Sat night. Gonna be a long couple of days.

Lots of hotel options in Birmingham, but I'm staying at uncle's.

Chicago to south bend was about the same distance and it was a pretty quick and painless drive.

Flying into Atlanta will be easy, hotels will be cheap (or cheaper than auburn) and there's actually things to do in Atlanta. Will probably just fly out Monday, no hassle.

A noontime kickoff would be very brutal for the team though, both in terms of jet lag and weather...

If you figure you have to fly in and out of Atlanta, you have to take that drive anyway, so might as well stay in Atlanta.

Try to stay in Auburn or Opelika. Drive from ATL isn't bad at all - will probably take you longer to get to your rental car after landing at ATL - chicken fingerz at Zaxby's on the way aren't too shabby. On your drive in (near the Kia plant in West Point, GA), you might see some remnants from the tornado last year. Puts a lot in perspective if you haven't seen what a tornado (EF-3) can do.

Once you arrive, vanilla lemonade at Toomer's. Repeat each day. Book a reservation for dinner at Acre. It's a great town - super friendly people. Beautiful campus.

Plus you might as well get to know Atlanta as a base for future games against Clemson and Georgia Tech.

Our plan is to fly to Atlanta and stay in Columbus, GA. We'd prefer to stay in Auburn, but lodging was too expensive.

You think teams from back east that come to Berkeley enjoy 7PM kickoffs?

i would fly to ATL and drive over flying into columbus. spent plenty of time in columbus for the army and it takes longer usually than just driving straight from atl.

It's a valid question, but I would argue having to get up and prep for a Noon et game (9a body clock) is harder than a college kid staying up until 1a body clock...

Jet lag/time change should not be an issue. Team will travel to the Eastern games on Thursdays for Saturday games.

On a somewhat related point, assuming Cal plays an ACC team in the east on a Sat. at 1 pm and wants to leave SF on Thursday at 9 a.m., when would they approximately expect to arrive on Thursday night assuming they would have to change planes before reach their destination on Thursday night? This is a "flying east" problem? Tx.

They don't change planes. They don't fly out of SF. They don't fly regular commercial flights. They use the old Kaiser Air terminal at Oakland (bypassing the main terminal, and they are security prescreened prior to arrival at the airport,) and they fly on a charter. They leave early mid-morning and arrive at late afternoon. They have flown out of the Kaiser Terminal on charters for decades.

Atlanta's incredibly noisy. Similar to SF these days. I've been kept up all night by police sirens and blasting car music as high as the 40th floor. I'd pay the extortionist prices nearer to Auburn to better enjoy the game. If you do choose to drive in, go the speed limit, as Southern Highway Patrol love game day. Drive sober!

I'm gonna guess the death of the Pac12 might be a fun thing for fans.
Lots of new places coming up. Not just OOC games.

Even pondering this is a total 180 for me.

No matter how many times this gets posted, I am convinced there are some here who don't understand what "charter" flights involve, and, how different they are from the rest of the world traveling for work or business...

Besides LA (which is a regular trip for a lot of us aside from Cal football), how many PAC-12 spots are decent destination trips, I did like Eugene when I went in 2007 but did not see much sizzle elsewhere in the conference, Corvallis and Pullman were non-starters, Tempe is not bad, Tucson is not great, Salt Lake is alright and so is Boulder, Seattle? With the rotating ACC schedule we will get a lot of variety in the coming years which will provide a good mix, I might even make a trip to Boston when we play BC just for the hell of it.

Jahvid Best and Kevin Riley destroyed Maryland in Cal's 2009 home opener, which I believe was either a dusk or evening game.

Final score: Cal 52 Maryland 13

Of course Cal beat Ole Miss 27-16 in an evening home game in 2017, Wilcox's first year, but Ole Miss isn't an east coast team, just 2 time zones away (I think?). Same Cal's 38-31 home victory over Michigan State in 2008, a dusk kickoff.
