ACC Network is previewing Cal Football on their Football Road Trip show tomorrow at 3PM PT. Per the DirecTV schedule, looks like it will be repeated hourly until 8PM, when they will air Cal-UCLA from 11/25/2023. After a short break from Cal-related programming, they will show Cal-North Texas from 9/2/2023 at 2AM Saturday. Then four more repeats of the preview show follow.

I don't mind the repeats - I'm just glad Cal will be broadcast on a TV network I receive.

The Pac-12 Network was such a disaster.

And to think, the unresolved Pac-12 network / longhorn network debate is the issue that prevented the Pac-16 with Texas, Texas AM, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, okie state, and Colorado joining.

Hah, the Longhorn Network didn't work out all that well either.

Anyway, the P12 Network itself was fine. Nice presentation. Larry's failure to get it picked up on all the major carriers was killing us.

Agree 100%, I loved the hosts and thought they did a decent job, it was Larry who was the disaster.

Neuheisel as a studio analyst was terrific.

Larry Scott. Schmuck of the decade. Why he was chosen and kept in place is beyond me. Board governance failure. Crazy that last season of PAC 12 football - forever - had some of the best teams in the country.

I'll admit that I was excited by his big plans when he came on. Maybe it was worth the risk to take on self-ownership of the conference network. I'll cut everyone some slack for the original hire.

But once it became clear that his big plans weren't working out, sticking with him for so long was baffling. At some point you have to realize that most people can't see the games on TV, right?

Agreed. His initial vision was good, and was a needed breath of fresh air for the conference. The first TV deal he secured was excellent. But the lingering issues with Directtv, the decision to set up shop in sf, and open up multiple cable channels at the dawn of the cord cutting era doomed him. Then there were decisions outside of his control that the conference that limited the conference (like deciding to pass on Texas and Oklahoma again in the mid 2010's, the schools refusal to play on weeknights, and the insistence of giving the Olympic sports their due) further hampered him.

So in summation, he had a great first act, below average middle act, and horrible final act.

But the lingering issues with Directtv,
This just continued to bug me to no end. Larry kept getting deals with just about every other national carrier besides DirecTV. He got us on Dish, Sling, Fubo, etc.

But DirecTV had the NFL Sunday Ticket. That meant all the sports bars carried it and most national sports journalists probably also had it, and it also meant they didn't have the Pac-12. Then Sunday Ticket moved to streaming on YouTube TV. Was the Pac-12 Network on that? No. Those should have been the first priority, even if it meant initially being paid less. People need to see the games!

Total failure. I know we also had the option to sell partial ownership to ESPN and partner with them. That probably would have also helped the network get picked up on the major carriers (ESPN can really throw their weight around in negotiations). Didn't happen. That was baffling too. He just kept doubling down on the original mistake.

Then there were the officiating scandals with the head of officials offering bounties to T- up Monty and the complete corruption to get Stanford into the BCS by jobbing Cal in Big Games. The game with our best defensive player thrown out on the kickoff, 3 TDs overturned by the booth and funniest of all, a ref looking into a scrum after a fumble, pretending to see the ball and emphatically signalling Stanford ball despite the ball actually being in the hands of a Cal player holding it high in front of the Student Section. Then there was Skov's completely illegal late hit targeting no call on Goff knoocking him out of the game and requiring off season surgery with a penalty actually called on Cal negating the first down and giving the ball back to Stanford…..

All of that stuff sucked too, though ultimately I don't think officiating is why the Pac-12 broke up. The media distribution was the critical piece.

Oh I know, but since we were criticizing Larry Scott I just saw an opening to vent.

Syracuse rivals preview of your Bears.

Most Cuse fans who follow things closely realize it is tough for east coast teams to win on the west coast.

Nice write-up, very fair. The only thing I would add is a mention of Chandler Rogers as competing with Mendoza for the QB1 position or at least depth, which is vital by the time we play Syracuse in November.
