Can anyone explain that touchback call near the end of the game?

Maybe I forgot the fine print in the rulebook, but was that actually a touchback?

If you play for Auburn you re-establish instantly but if you play for Cal it takes a few seconds.
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

I don't recall a replay to show whether the ball crossed the goal line. College rules only care about where the ball is and not the player

I think they claimed he didn't get his feet in the field of play after being in the end zone.

I can't be bothered to rewind the one view we have, and it looked like the announcer wanted to see other angles, but ESPN went to scores, and they almost missed the next play, so we never got a good angle.

I am guessing it was a bad call, since on one side they said he was good, and the other called touchback, and I am bias.

As ninetyfourbear pointed out the rule in college is the ball and not the player. You can be standing in the endzone and bat the ball into play before it crosses the plane and it's not a touchback. We conveniently never saw a replay but it looked pretty clear from the original view that it was just a terrible call (although there were several of them both directions yesterday)

Yes, from the TV angle, the ball did not look like it crossed the plane, but maybe it did. That they did not show a replay was... "suspicious", especially since Auburn was getting calls in their favor right and left in the 4th quarter.

I forgot about this because we won…but I have no clue why that was considered a touchback. The ball didn't even look "close" to crossing the end zone.

The ball clearly stopped short of the end zone, even without the Cal player touching it (he didn't need to even put his hands on it, since it wasn't really moving.) At the time, I was assuming the rule was that a player can't come back into the field of play from the end zone to down the ball, and so I thought it was a bonehead play. But it seems it was just one of several egregiously bad calls.

Did the gunner re-establish himself in the field of play?
