The "Oh Yeah" cheer.

The "Who ya rootin for . . . C-A-L"

Both of these were started in the late 70s early 80s by the head mic man at the time. I think his name was Ben Wallace?

"Roll on you beaarss!!" This cheer, with a point toward the other teams end zone, is done when Cal is on offense, after we cross the 50 yard line.

It would be nice to get more variety in the cheers.

We were definitely doing that at Auburn throughout the game! Does it not happen at home? Maybe it was the non-students leading cheers at Auburn that have this cheer in their back pocket.
Cal Football. It just means more.

"Rollll onnn you Beaars!" looks great on videos with everybody pointing at the same time. Haven't seen one in videos from the Auburn game yet, but it's definitely alive at home. Only problem with UC Davis game was that there were only a handful of first downs after crossing the 50. Expecting many more against SDSU.

Good point: I believe the traditional time for that cheer is on our first 1st down of a drive in enemy territory.

The yell leader that started those other cheers was Ben Dixon. Those were cool, but maybe the current mic men could come up with something that is cool for 2024.

Ben Dixon. Thanks. That was going to bother me for awhile. He was as good a mic man as Ken, especially considering the team was not that good in that era.

Ben's successor -- same name as a former Cal RB and a good yell leader in his own right -- posts here as fyght4cal.

Kids today generally only know how to meme and post TikTok videos. That is what they think of as cool. Wanting them to come up with a cool cheer goes against what they understand. It's like asking a Boomer to come up with a cool TikTok video. While there might be one or two who can do it well, the vast majority will either fail miserably with their best efforts or not know even know where to begin.

Cheers that need to go away:

"Go Big Blue, show what you can do" Way too many syllables for a large student section and sounds slurred and tired.

"California (clap clap clap clap clap)" Way too high school, and ultra generic.

Cheers that need to come back:

Cal spellout performed crisply and loudly.

Simple "DEFENSE"......nothing else, just "DEFENSE".

"Oh Yeah" needs no explanation.

"Roll on You Bears (3 times) followed by "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT" as it used to be done.

"First Down Bears".

Overhead clap, with crescendo leading to a roar on 3rd downs.

Now it may be that the students still do these yells even now. But I can't hear them. Yell leaders don't tell them to get louder anymore so I'm not sure if they do them or not. I also know that since the idiots in marketing have been doing more and more piped in crap, the students seem to have pretty much given up on some old traditions. They did try a couple of years ago, and just got overwhelmed by the piped in sh___. So I think they gave up.

Extra:

Cal student section used to do their own Haka before the game. It was awesome. I think a yell leader named Jamie was responsible for it. I don't know that the current students could pull it off. But it was incredible and fun when it was done.

"C-A-L Who ya rootin for?", otherwise known as "C-A-L arooo, arooo, arooo!", was fun, funny, and should be a keeper. Surely today's TikTok kids like to have fun at a game?

Jacks, marbles, and hula hoops were all considered fun once upon a time. Something tells me today's kids wouldn't feel the same way about them.

No. The haka is a Maori custom. Having a group of non-Maori who have no ties to Maori culture perform a haka is pure and unadulterated cultural appropriation. Cal should absolutely NOT engage in cultural appropriation.

Maybe we should have a designated alumni rooting section with alumni yell leaders so alumni can show up early, do their favorite yells, do card stunts, etc and not be frustrated when the students don't do them?

Lol! That would be awesome! But the Cal tradition that would prove the most popular is b**ching and moaning about how Cal doesn't support athletics and that the second string QB is better than the starter!

Generic but I liked for first downs

First and ten do it again, GO, BEARS x3 (with band accompaniment)

I think ROYB is perfect for crossing the 50 and the 20.

There were other traditions with them, key jangling and dollar bill waiving implying: 1) they paid their players and gave them cars, and/or 2) their students are spoiled rich kids at an overpriced school and many commute to campus.

The song thing makes me think we will have to do something for Florida State's band.

What I'd like to see again is a competently executed alternating Go/Bears. The mic men keep forgetting that it MUST start with 'HEY ALUMNI! GO!" because this is the cue for the alumni to do their part.

Instead, we get this (both last night, and against Davis)

Students: "GO"
Pom pom girls: (shake their pompoms toward the west)
Alumni:

Students: "GO"
Pom pom girls: (shake their pompoms toward the west)
Alumni: I'm going to the bathroom and see if I can find some hot chocolate.

Students: "GO"
Pom pom girls: (shake their pompoms toward the west)
Alumni: (???) I think they're talking to us. Oh crap, we're on. BEARS!

And it's even worse, because the mic men think it's a good time to start when the DJ is blasting and/or the Cal Band is playing.

That was an epic blowout of USC, the most points they'd ever given up (until Harbaugh was the Stanford coach). Some garbage time TDs made it look closer than it really was.

Despite the score, the USC band kept playing the song so we had a lot of other variants of the last line. Words rhyming with "go." Such as: "Your father needs a bl__" and "your sister is a h__" (which the Mic Man was not expecting).

Yeah, the Tribute to Troy song. I can definitely picture something rather catchy for FSU's War Chant.

I really liked the stadium wide C A L with the band leading the cadence.

That was probably the best new cheer in a long time.

If I understand rightly, the Cal Haka was written for Cal by a Pacific Islander Cal student.

Clearly the best Cal yell leader ever was Bob Tuck in 1970. I was an assstant to him. Completely fearless and creative and did an amazing thing against USC in L.A. that probably will never come close to being duplicated wearing a gorilla outfit.

Anyone want to hear Tuck's accomplishments as Cal's head yell leader and compare them to any other Cal head leader they have seen? They will amaze you.

Gobears49

I saw this screwed up when I was at Cal

You need someone on the (then) alumni side to hold up a sign with the writing BEARS and then the alumni will know what to do and when. Once that was done a few times the alumn knew what to do without prompting.
