Football: Millikan and Anthony League Run Past Carson The562.org

Living in Long Beach I watch all the local teams having played and coached here at LB Wilson. I recently noted that ex LB Poly and Cal WR Desean Jackson is coaching this year with the Bruins who are off to their first winning season in years.

Nearby LB Millikan Rams senior running back Anthony League is a two-way starter and is one to keep an eye on next year at Cal. He also plays defense and is a 4.0 student. I am excited to see a Long Beach native help the Bears out next season! Our recruiting continues to be impressive. Go Bears!
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

I never understood why DeSean got so much hate on this board. I liked him and thought he was a great player at Cal. He represented Cal well on and off the field. Sure, he had some boneheaded moments in the NFL (his early TD celebration where he dropped the football before breaking the plane of the end zone being the most memorable), but he was playing up the entertainment aspect of the professional game. I don't remember him doing anything similar at Cal.

Also, I don't remember DeSean ever getting negative publicity or press for his off-field life either as a Cal player or as a pro. He seemed to have his head on straight. On the other hand, I kind of have a vague memory of him doing some volunteer work or helping with a charity.

I'll always be grateful to DeSean for (1) choosing Cal over all the national blueblood football programs, (2) putting on dazzling memorable performances at Cal, and (3) for proudly representing Cal in the NFL.

As a side note, I used to also like pointing out to my friends that DeSean was a math major at Cal. That was enough for me to know the guy is far from stupid. No one gets through a single math course (let alone two and a half to three years of math courses) at Cal by being a dummy. DeSean earned extra respect points from me for majoring in one of Cal's tougher disciplines.

I too believe Desean deserves a lot more love, but are you sure he was a Math major? I remember Joe Igber majored in Architecture, but I would be stunned if any football player majored in Math or Engineering (having gone through the program myself).

I always loved DeSean, he's been great in the community wherever he's been and has been a banner holder for Cal when the post-Tedford years left us precious few points of pride. There were some stories about him being a diva (what star WR isn't?) but nothing major, especially at Cal, and never any stories of him being a distraction or a bad teammate. The only issue I've ever had with him were the anti-Semitic tweets but hopefully that was more of an uneducated social media position that he didn't fully understand the scope of. Regardless, those were a terrible look and I'm not gonna equivocate or minimize anti-semitism in any context

IIRC, that's what was listed when I googled him during his Cal days. Maybe the information was incorrect or maybe he changed majors, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were accurate. DeSean went to Long Beach Poly, which did (and does) have some great academic programs. While I don't know if DeSean participated in them, it wouldn't supremely me if he did as he did choose to attend Cal for college. That latter, alone, suggests he valued a great education. This likely was instilled in him at an early age.

I'd forgotten about the tweets. IIRC, DeSean removed those tweets after the antisemitism was pointed out to him. I tend to agree with you that he probably didn't understand the origins and intent behind the original tweets/posters.

Couldn't resist giving little jab, but that really is Worrell. He also wore number one at the same time.

A quick note on Desean - while at LB Poly he was an outstanding and highly recruited baseball player as well. I coached at rival LB Wilson. The rumors were: Poly didn't need a right or left fielder with him in center. And, once on first base, in a blink he was on third. The bad rep while at Cal might have been his early intention while there to be in the NFL. His brother privately filmed him every game. He also didn't seem to like to be used as a decoy after they started double teaming him. Now coaching at LB Wilson he seems (I have watched him) genuinely concerned with the team, is noticeably upbeat, and has worked 1 on 1 with the best receiver. He has added a spark to the team and relates well with the young players.

All good. The talent that made Desean most unique to me -- and one of the main reasons he was such a great return man -- is that he is the greatest I have ever seen one-on-one in the open field. As far as I have seen, he has never been stopped one-on-one in the open field !!

Yes, the most talented player we have ever fielded, best punt returner in the history of the Pac, maybe even in all of college football.

Aaron Rodgers was completely correct to enter the draft. But for one season, what could have been with him and DeSean on the same roster (with Marshawn as a sophomore)..

The 9ers destroyed that potential championship season with ARod as our Sr QB by making him believe that they were going to draft him in the 1st round.

Ironically they suffered even more by not drafting him, missing out on what would have been another 9er dynasty.

Not just the first round, #1. They picked Alex Smith instead.

Amen. But for what it's worth most on this board seemed to hate Keenan Allen, Shareef Abdul-Rahim and Jaylen Brown when they played for Cal too.

Some Cal fans seem to really dislike 5 star players, our best players, especially if they are not from the Bay Area.

Maybe time has dulled my memory, and I wasn't nearly as active on here back then, but as far as I know the only knock against Keenan was that he was a package deal with Maynard who was so frustrating with his inconsistency. Jaylen was amazing he just had parts of his game still to develop and it sucked watching them flame out and underperform in the tourney, but that last part was just a Cuonzo problem as he's proven time and again at every coaching stop

That locker room in 2007 imploded after the Beaver debacle. he knew his talent and believed he was under utilized, to some it came off like extreme selfishness. He wasn't a team leader and Cal needed a player to unify the team.

No, the issue was Desean went to Tedford to lobby for Riley being given another chance and that was viewed by Longshore, his clique, and much of the coaching staff as insubordination which they openly shared with insiders and reporters and was spread on this board. People even saying Desean, not Longshore's fractured ankle, was the reason we were losing and that we would be better in 2008 through "addition by subtraction." The negativity from the Cal staff (absolutely not Tedford) was the reason Desean fell so far in the draft, probably costing him $millions.

There was a conspiracy theory on this board, believed by the apparent majority, that Keenan was "blackmailing" Tedford to start Maynard despite, in their view Bridgford being better, sight unseen. Keenan was hated for their imagined actions, seeing it as bringing down the team. One poster, a student, who believed the conspiracy, would share stories of Keenan falling asleep during a lecture, criticize his attire, or give details of his conversations with young women who would come up to talk with him. Of course, once they got their wish and Maynard got hurt, they saw how bad Bridgford really was.

What dropped Desean is a different matter. I was talking more about what happened in the locker room than why yall on this board where hating on DeSean.

I'll take the word of the player I know over yours on what happened in that locker room, though.

Was the player you know on the Longshore side or Riley side? Was he one of the ones who bought the strength coach's BS that Desean was being a "Prima Donna" for refusing to bulk up using his body building techniques that resulted in Longshore tearing his pec while lifting in his off season workouts?
