The article, featuring an interview with Andrew Luck, on the need for a general manager in today's major college football. Probably firewalled.

I hate it when you have to pay for things that cost money to produce.

Who would be on the top candidates list to be Cal's GM if such a position were to open up?

Luck is a good choice for Stanford because the most urgent need is someone with the ability to raise a lot more money for football from donors, comparable to what the top third of the ACC raises. Who can potentially do for Cal what Luck can potentially do for Stanford?

Obviously Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch would be our two biggest profile guys right now from the NFL. Rodgers is still active and frankly, not sure this would fit the kind of gig he would even want or be good at and Lynch is already kind of a special ambassador to Cal anyway which might be great role to continue.

So thinking outside the box, and I am not saying we could get them, just throwing out some names.

A proven and very likable guy would be Shareef Abdur-Rahim. He has plenty of management skills already and is the current President of the NBA G League. Widely respected and seems to love Cal. So while not a footballer, he does have a swag and a track record that seems fit for the job. Probably very difficult to pry from his current post.

Sticking with hoopers, how about Sean Marks, current GM of the Brooklyn Nets. Was long part of the management tree with the San Antonio Spurs and draws rave reviews from Gregg Popovich. But also not likely to leave current post.

And perhaps even more difficult to pry away, would be Jason Kidd, current head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

Again, even though they're all hoopers, I feel like they could probably sit in any room and command an audience and all love Cal.

Oh one more, GM in waiting, Jaylon Brown of the Boston Celtics. That dude would be awesome for the job some day.

Abdur-Rahim is interesting if he would be interested. Jaylen Brown has a long, lucrative NBA future ahead of him.

Yeah, Jaylen Brown has 304 million reasons not to take the Cal GM job.

Be fair to me, I did say "GM in waiting" lol. And by waiting it obviously means 10 or 15 years because he is a baaaad maaan on the court.

absolutely should have a business manager ... coaches shouldn't be talking to agents and players about T&Cs

She would be a good choice but I thought she was still with the Mavs, at least she was as of last season. My other choice though would be Leigh Steinberg: he has lots of NFL connections and experience, he managed a major sports agency, his philanthropy work is legendary, his experience working through personal struggles gives him perspective, and he would have a great grasp on the financial side of things.

Dark horse would be Cam Jordan. Cam is incredibly intelligent and well-respected, his NFL career is coming to an end, and his work as an NFLPA rep would give him better insight on the business aspects of the sport. The reason I think it would be a dark horse move is that he likely has a broadcaster gig lined up already and those are cushy, well paying jobs that can last basically forever

"Obviously Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch...". Um, I thought we were actually talking 'serious' - qualified candidates.

Did you even read the paragraph? I only said they were obviously the most recognizable, never saying "seriously" qualified. In fact, I then go on to mention that maybe neither is qualified.

For discussion sake, I was thinking of guys who could match or beat Andrew Luck's recognizability, and these two fit the bill, but to me it is more complicated and therefore these two guys are probably not the right guys.

Cam is a really good one, nice. I'm a little disappointed I didn't mention him lol.

Yes, I read the entire post. I just decided to call out the incongruity of even the passing 'thought' of AR or Marshawn as considerations for such a role. The job requirements do not prioritize - or even call for - "recognizability". They demand broad experience, expertise, and "ability".
