Cal players in the UFL? Not this year

I looked through the rosters for every UFL team. There are no former Cal players in the league this year. I did not look for players that played at Cal but transferred elsewhere. So, unless you're a fan of teams east of the Rockies, your spring weekends are free.

I'm surprised Chase Garbers isn't playing anymore. Last year he played for the San Antonio Brahmas, was injured, returned from injury at the end of the season, and immediately took back his starting position. Garbers beat out Kevin Hogan (yeah, the ex-'furd QB) for the starting position and Hogan is still with the San Antonio Brahmas.

I don't know if Garbers is still looking to play football or has decided to pursue life after ball, but I did watch him last season, and I recall his last drive of their Championship Game, down 3 scores and needing a first down late in the 3rd quarter, he scrambled on 3rd and 1 for what looked for sure to be a drive extending 1st down - only to begin his slide early and get called down short. On 4th and 1 he then threw a zero yard completion and San Antonio turned the ball over on downs.

Several shots along the sidelines showed very frustrated teammates, first regarding his slide on 3rd down, and then lastly a zero yard completion on 4th. This included shots of some players going to him after he came off the field and getting in his grill.

He never returned to the game as they inserted the 2nd string guy and eventually lost.

I do recall that final sequence because I remember him doing that in the 15-14 win against USC when he scrambled for what would have likely been a game clinching 1st down but slid early instead of diving forward.

We then got the 1st on a run up the middle on 4th down which was memorable for many reasons but one being the number of lightly recruited 2 and 3 star guys and some PWO lined up against USC's bevy of 4 and 5 star guys just blowing them off the line of scrimmage for the game clinching play.

I don't know if the way his season ended last year affected whether San Antonio decided to bring him back, or whether the rest of the UFL teams passed. When he played, he certainly looked like he had a lot of tools that could get him back on to an NFL roster - but his early slide and then a zero yard completion brought back memories of so many frustrating plays he made (or didn't make) at Cal.

His game winning drive against Stanford will always make him a Cal legend, but has overall career certainly was marked by points of frustratingly poor decisions / execution.

UFL pays something like $50k/yr, so it's not really a career, but could be a place to showcase yourself to get another NFL opportunity. It doesn't look like that materialized for Garber last fall, so it does seem like a god time to move on.

Surprised Kevin Hogan is hanging around in UFL at this point in his career.

Garbers has decent skills but a weak arm, so no pro upside. He's a likeable kid with a Berkeley degree and a well-off Newport Beach family. He's going to have a nice career ahead of him and doesn't need to get knocked around for a couple grand a game.

He made some money as a backup for the Raiders too. Nicely set up to start real life.

I didn't mean to imply the UFL is a career destination, just that it's the place for guys like him to continue playing in hopes of catching the eye of someone in the NFL.

If he's no longer on a UFL roster and isn't at least on someone's training camp roster this Summer I imagine he has probably decided to move on.
