This year's Mr. Irrelevant is Kobie Minor from Texas Tech to the Patriots.

In 1983, Cal's RB John Tuggle was the last pick of the NFL Draft by the NY Giants, and if you know his story, his story is quite the courageous one, as he fought hard to make it onto the roster but unfortunately succumbed to cancer shortly after in 1986. He was quite the player for Cal, rushing for 93 yards against Stanford in his final game (The Play).

Last year they announced that they are making a movie "Mr Irrelevant" about him and will star David Corenswet, the actor most recently tapped as the next Superman, which sounds appropriate.

I have long had the memory of "Tuggle the ball carrier" from the stadium PA in my head.
I'm shocked to learn he died of cancer in 1986!

If you have access to ESPN+, search for the 30 for 30 episode titled "The Irrelevant Giant". It might get dusty.

Report says no link between cancer, stadium - UPI Archives

https://www.upi.com/Archives/1989/07/14/Report-says-no-link-between-cancer-stadium/6286616392000/

" The cancers contracted by four New York Giants football players were not caused by anything at Giants Stadium or the rest of the Meadowlands Sports Complex, researchers concluded Friday.

Doctors were commissioned by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority to conduct a $250,000 study after four Giants were diagnosed with various forms of the disease over a span of seven years."

The cluster of cancer cases among players first surfaced in 1980 when linebacker Dan Lloyd was found to have malignant lymphoma. The cancer victims would eventually include running back Doug Kotar, who died of a brain tumor; running back John Tuggle, who died of angiosarcoma, a blood vessel cancer, and offensive tackle Karl Nelson, who was diagnosed with Hodgkins disease in 1986."
