Jesus H Christ. I realize we live in a post-fact world but this is ridiculous. Sacramento State currently plays in a football stadium that seats 21,000 fans. They are "upgrading" to a new stadium that seats 25,000. Their entire athletic department received donations last year of under $1 million. Cal raised $2 million in a single day last week. They had $400k in total ticket sales for their entire athletic department. Cal had tens of millions and we consider THAT to be woefully inadequate. And yet we have their head coach saying stuff like this:

Quote:

"There's a lot of people in this community with real money … and they're really all in on making this a top-tier football program," Marion says. "If we're announced FBS when we're announced FBS the only schools on the West Coast that will have more than us financially when it comes to helping players in NIL will be USC and Oregon."
OK, let's pretend like Cal and UCLA and Stanford don't exist. Washington? A school that played in the national championship game two years ago? Hello?

The $4 million they are reporting in NIL for their entire athletic department this year (and I'll believe that number when I see it) is still 1/5 of what Cal is spending this year WITHOUT any of the millions California Legends has already handed out.

And of course their application for FBS membership was just denied and yet they are saying they are going to be playing at the FBS level in 2026.

Despite all this they are still announcing they are going to become the third most well capitalized school on the West Coast? And The Athletic just repeats it?

Denial ain't a river in Egypt.

found this article on www.on3.com. https://www.on3.com/nil/news/sacramento-state-hornets-pac-12-committee-raises-35-million-nil-funds.

My understanding, which may be wrong, is that almost all the money has come from Indian Tribes. My suspicion is that a lot of the money is ending-up in paying for new coaching staff if Sebasterbear's NIL numbers are on track.

Maybe donations for Sac State facility upgrades were pledged on the condition that the football team be in FBS. If that is so, the university president, AD, and football coach have a lot of incentive to spread the FBS rhetoric on thick.

"Fake it till you make it."

Imagine if we had Sac State's chutzpah and ambition to go with our infinitely greater resources and tradition.

The AD at Sac State, Mark Orr, is a Cal graduate who got his start in IA admin at Cal, working in the compliance area.

All Sac St can point at is a nice three-year run under Troy Taylor. I doubt there is a "$50 million" NIL war chest. There are plenty of prosperous folks in the Sacramento area, but as far as real heavyweights, Buzz Oats died eleven years ago and that pretty much leaves real estate mogul Angelo Tsakopoulos. His daughter Eleni is Lt Governor but when when it came to college, she went to Dartmouth and Cal (MBA) for degrees. Vivek Ranadive, who owns the Kings is a Sacramento booster, but has no connection to Sac State. In short, I don't know where the money will come from.
The current Sac St president seems to be a mercurial character as evidenced by Sac State marketing themselves as "Combat U" and hosting MMA events:

I'd be happy if the Hornets did well under Marion just to have something interesting to read in the Sac Bee sports section before the NBA season starts. But no doubt the school is a stepping stone for him - he just won't make the mistake Taylor made of departing for a can't-win situation like Stanford.

The Wilton Rancheria tribe, owners of the Sky River casino, just purchased 51% of the Sacramento Republic USL club. Perhaps there is interest in athletics there, with money to back it up.
