Let's try to make this as gold as we can. It'll also make the Black Bear section pop, if that's still a thing next week.

Serious question because curious minds want to know... What is the point of a Gold Out?

Especially when the Golden Bears are playing the GOLDEN Gophers.

A coordinated effort to make blue stand out does make more sense for this game.

Do we even have a "gold" cheer? Like "go big blue…show what you can do".

A gold out is hard for a night game because people tend not to have gold jackets, etc., which will be needed to stay warm

Exactly. It's a dumb idea, especially for a night game. I mean, how many folks have gold or yellow jackets or sweaters. Temperatures are likely to be in the low 60s for much of the game.

Plus it's cold at night and people will be wearing coats.

I will wear a white thermal underneath a gold shirt. Yes, this could be planned better but it's clear that the admin is finally trying. Let's pitch in and less b! tchin'

Deja Vu nightmares with the gold out idea. How many years ago did this fail even with gameday hand outs? And how many other than a few thousand loyal fans, got the news? It looks even worse when there are patches of Blue or whatever else fans wear at night games. I mean, I can do it - got several gold t shirts from past purchases at the Student Store. No, it's not going to work, but thank you for your attention to this message.
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

Yeah, when planning this, first thing you do is look at the opponent's colors, to decide whether to go gold or blue.

And then the jackets for a night game would also be a factor.

Oh well, as others have mentioned, we're trying stuff...

For a school of smart people you would just like it to be smart or at least not stupid. Ask the Calgorithm.

Years ago with JT they tried free mini Cal megaphones. Remember? There were over 25,000 I believe and the Pac 12 banned them calling them "noise makers" I think. Well, they must be somewhere!!

Opposing colors being gold is a good thing gents. Makes the job easier, the scene that much more impressive, obscures their numbers and uses their apparel against them

It was cold yesterday at the end of the game if your 18-45 maybe not.

Yes, the night game does mean it's more of a jacket/sweater weather but they absolutely do make sweatshirts in gold. They also make jerseys in gold that fit over outerwear.

I'll happily agree that Cal traditionally sucks at making Gold Outs happen (like, just give out free XXL shirts that all visitors can pop over whatever they're wearing), but I also realize that the reason why they always correspond with night games and we never try to do a Blue Out is that a dark Blue would not standout nearly as well at a night game than Gold.

That is what I was thinking. Having a gold out with another gold team will trick the TV audience into thinking we have more fans at the stadium than we actually do.

If Cal did a gold out against a team that wears red, it most certainly would have failed, but against another gold team, it could appear better than it actually is.

I'm sure that the broadcast commentators will make ample note of the distinction so as to appear unbiased, ad nauseum.

Hello Golden Bears!

Just a Golden Gopher wishing your team good luck on the field as well as good luck with the Gold Out.

The comments on your board on this upcoming Gold Out are pretty similar to posts we had on our home GopherHole site for past attempts at Gold Outs, Maroon Outs, and Stripe Outs. Participation was historically dismal, especially for the Gold Outs because maroon-colored apparel dominated the sportswear market.

However, the Sports powers at be started a run at them again here recently and participation has been pretty good of late, even for Gold Outs. Pretty much everyone has at least one gold colored item that can work for a warm weather game. It actually looks pretty good on TV plus being in the stands.

Anywho just dropping by to say this should be a good match-up with most Gophers making the trip wearing Maroon so it will be clear who's for who in this contest.

Looking forward to the game! Great site too!

Finally, we say "Ski U Mah" (sky-you-ma), which is allegedly a derivative of a Sioux war chant that means "Go Gophers!" We also say "Row The Boat" with Coach PJ Fleck at the helm. Have a great week as we get to gameday. BilldGopher.

Well they have tried Gold Out for football games but super weak because there was really no marketing conviction and it looks to be the same this time. You know I have been a proponent, and I would always be a team player and wear gold, but I've given up on this concept unless they hand out the shirts to everyone, which they have never done for football (hoops yes and that's why it worked). As for gold out against a team that also wears gold, I think the cheat code is that we co-opt their fans too so it looks like more gold out sections lol.

Minnesota may...and I say "may"...have gold lettering or a stripe somewhere but otherwise we'll be dressed in maroon on maroon...or some maroon and white combination. The Bears will be the gold ones for this game at least on the field.

Yeah, my issues are:

A "fill in color here" - Out. only works if you fill the stadium with people to wear that color. It's awesome when you have a full stadium and everyone participates, but I don't think we are there on the first requirement and even less so on the second.

I will continually argue that while I acknowledge that Gold is the more striking color for the purpose, blue is going to get a much higher participation rate and therefor would work much better.

To your point about marketing conviction, it feels to me like the Gold out thing is just an easy way to say you are doing something without really doing anything. It is extremely easy to send out an email and a press release saying "Hey everyone! Wear Gold this week!" You know full well that this level of effort won't work. If you actually want to pull off a Gold out, you have to do a lot more. They don't. For that reason, no, I'm not going to credit them with doing something.

What I would prefer to see is a giveaway to the students of reversible T-shirts with a campaign to wear the blue side if you sit on a blue seat and the gold side if you sit on a gold seat. I think the students could achieve that and you could have every game with the TV facing a Big C in the stands. Essentially, stationary card tricks. (this was actually what Cal did in the old, old, old days to create the card trick concept. The "100 Years of Blve and Gold" book had a picture of the rooting section wearing caps to create that effect.

My grandparents both attended U of Minnesota and my mom was born there before coming to California with them in the 1930s. My grandfather even has a county named after him, Wright County.. After arriving in California my mom ended up marrying my dad, a Golden Bear Cal grad! When I graduated from Cal I actually applied to Law School at U of Minn even though my grandfather warmed me of the weather! (I didn't get in anyway!).

Great story 72. Yes, Wright County has grown up since GrandDad and is an outer-ring part of the metro Twin Cities area. Still a lot of agriculture but suburbia encroaching in.

Mrs. Billd's family hails from Iowa and a branch on her side moved to The Golden State in the 1940s and got into real estate in Los Angeles. Did quite well as you might imagine over the years. The subsequent generations are all over the southern half of your state from San Diego up to Silicon Valley.to San Francisco.

I'm sure wherever you landed for law school was just fine. I'm originally from Georgia and been here for over 30 years. The winters are overrated if you ask me (maybe global warming?) however the climate does make for great outdoor football as fall winds down. Love the snow games.
