If we and SMU were both undefeated, we would have had a great shot. But as it currently stands, even if SMU can run the table in conference play (taking down Miami in the process), there are just too many other high profile rivalry games that week. Texas and A&M, OSU and Michigan, heck even Georgia and GT if they can keep it going. And frankly, we don't have any other home games against a high quality opponent worthy of CGD. They're not going to come out here for the likes of Duke, UNC, or UVA.

I think our only shot at game day would be if we win the acc championship and host a playoff game. But if the narrative around cal keeps growing, that smu game (if they're undefeated) would have a lot more interest than people might think. It's new and different. Ohio State Michigan is old and done.

OSU Michigan is already scheduled for 12ET on Fox. So that's almost guaranteed to be a Big Noon game. So doubtful (not impossible) that gameday goes there.

Texas may have several losses by then unless they figure out their QB situation.

So who knows.

Given our lack of marquee opponents, it's very unlikely. But if things break completely right then I'd give a remote chance to the SMU game bringing GameDay. A lot would have to happen.

Yeah, Fox owns the B1G rights. It will more likely be an SEC matchup that week since that is ESPN's big property.

If we continue to pile up wins with JKS shining, his star power alone and the story of Cal being the ultimate dark horse contender might by itself be compelling enough. There are a couple of marquee matchups on Nov. 1 for Virginia, including PSU-OSU and Florida-UGA but who knows.

In any case, if we keep winning the excitement will be there, Gameday or not.

I won't speculate on GameDay. But I will say this, Pat's enthusiasm for what he experienced is strong, and maybe contagious. It's been said before, but I'll say it again, compliments to all who made that event happen and made it so successful. Cal certainly made an impression, and it was badly needed!

I think there should be at least a minimum 2 years between Gameday appearances. Last year was special. It likely won't be the same. Being back so soon would make the audience less interested and the locals less interested.

It does seem like our turnout for GameDay opened a lot of eyes over at ESPN, not just McAfee. They would be happy to have a good Cal team to promote.

If we're theoretically undefeated (against SMU) and looking at the playoffs? It'll probably be bigger than last time
Cal88

If we're 11-0 going into SMU, then JKS automatically is the lead contender for the Heisman.

Odds of us getting to 11-0 are around 3%-4% tops (insert Jim Carey meme...)

In 2007 Oregon had Gameday twice in the span of a month

Cal has not done well with attendance on that post-Thanksgiving Saturday and I don't think any network wants to show a half-empty stadium - especially the student section.
Cal88

They mainly care about attendance at the Gameday event, where we have already exceeded all expectations. Besides if we get the kind of record that will draw Gameday, the stadium will be packed as well (see the Miami game last year).

True but that attendance happened during seasons when the team was mediocre at best.

It's Oregon, a top tier school. It's Eugene. What else are they going to do?

I think last year was boosted by Bay Areans experiencing something they haven't really experienced before. (I believe Stanford has only hosted once). It was widely covered by local outlets. But the crowd may not be as big this time around (unless SMU is a massive game).

This.

I can't remember a "significant" game that weekend when we were good (say at least 8 wins going in). Especially once that became the game after the Big Game.

But if the scenario was something like 10-1 or 11-0 Cal playing SMU for an ACC Championship Game Berth against Miami (so both would be top 10-top 12 ish teams, there is no way that game doesn't sell out.

Because it's not like that game would then be happening as an out of the blue event. The build up all season enroute to a 10 or 11 win season and all the incredible story lines that would have to have played out would ensure that game is sold out

The football expectations and potential are higher now. Last year there was a lot of excitement around Gameday because the fan base felt that the program was showing signs of life and no longer a pushover, but this time around the talk is of playoff potential, and lots more optimism with Knowlton gone, Rivera in charge and the brain trust on the coaching staff. It's a feeling that the fan base has only experienced twice in the last 40+ years under Snyder and Tedford.

You forget, we had the returning Pac-12 rushing leader in Ott, underrated hometown hero "The Jet " the Calgorithm and "Ott to Go" and Mendoza was playing out of his mind, this board absolutely loved him throwing to great TEs and WRs including breakout freshman Nyzaiah Hunter. On defense we had "The Takers" and Uluave. We beat Auburn on the road. All playing our first season in the ACC.

We had also lost in dispiriting fashion to a bad-looking FSU team in the previous game, though, and yeah it turned out they were very bad. But that was in Game 4. So let's see what that looks like for us this year.

Better be, but part of that view at this point is that hindsight is 20-20 and we know how last year's almost as easy ACC schedule went.

Last year we had poor OL, awful PK and problems with coaching on offense. 9 points against the worst FSU team in their entire modern history, that was pathetic.

This year the defense seems to have reloaded, some new stars like Masses and Bush, and solid well-coached team D. The only dropoff from last year seems to be at WR, although that may improve. ST vastly improved, OL improved, playcalling, preparation on O improved, and we also have the most talented QB in the NCAA, who also happens to be unusually mature for a true freshman...

Imagine what this Cal team would have done at Talahassee last year, they would have won by 3-4 TDs, and would have kept scoring against Miami, we would have closed the deal before the 4th quarter. This year's team would have been 9-3 or 10-2 last year.

Y'all, if we're undefeated (or close to it) at that point in the season, attendance will take care of itself. Sure, plenty of students will be offsite, but many more would make the effort to be there than otherwise.
