Bear Insider's favorite Cal alum sports journalist would've turned 90 on February 16.

Glenn Dickey was a true Cal alum, who clearly spent a lot of time viewing the program and thinking about what they needed. Then he had a big megaphone to tell that to the rest of us. As these examples show, he was right more often than not. If we had had someone like that in local media, Wilcox would never have survived as long as he did, because Dickey would have called out Knowlton years ago.

I suspect a lot of Donald Trump Rob Reiner type posts here for Dickey

RIP

Dickey was a very knowledgeable and frank sportswriter. Nobody in the current landscape comes close to him. I have missed him since he retired. RIP.

In the 80s, Glenn advocated for UC Davis coach Jim Sochor to be hired as the next Cal football coach. Sochor was super successful at Davis, going 156-41-5 overall, with an incredible 92-5 conference record and 18 consecutive conference titles. But as DII he had never had to recruit scholarship athletes. IIRC Sochor was interviewed more than once but never offered.

Have a lot of great memories of my dad and I reading Dickey in the Chron and talking about his articles with him over coffee at the local breakfast restaurant. Very sad loss for the Bay Area. Mostly when I lived in Vacaville as a young kid ..we'd go to the Black Tree restaurant right off I-80 like 5 in the morning heh.
