Remember he said that "we offered him the ability to play on both sides of the ball" and that "while all schools say it with cal he felt they really mean it"…

While I doubt that was ever going to happen here or anywhere my guess is this simply boils down to how much money is on the table.
While I suspect our coffers are now above average I don't think we're at a level yet where we can just drop a few million on a freshman with no d1 experience.

That or Sarkisian promised him a boat and Kiffin promised him some hoes.

Boats and hoes are hard to compete with.

I know he came on a visit and we came out of nowhere to even signal a degree of interest, but technically we weren't even on his Top 10 list from December.
