Lopa and Crosby carried us today. Other Bears for sure had some bright spots, but these guys were shining! They're talking about Lopa being national Player of the Week with his 3 INTs and he would be most deserving, but I thought, if it's even possible, Crosby was even better, making play after play all game.

A much-needed first win for the new program! GO BEARS!!!

They both seemed to know exactly where the ball was going to be headed for most of the game.

Don't forget Tuitele - I think he's clearly Cal's best inside backer. Jernigan, however, had a really rough start - he was caught out of position multiple times. I'd like to see Hampton get more game time.

Daniel Harris showed some serious stuff today also. Another sack and some pretty good coverage skills. But his effort was the most notable.

Him chasing down the Cuse RB on that first long run on their first possession was impressive. That guy had a huge head start and Harris ran him down. Even Lopa wasn't going to be able to catch the guy. That forced a FG on the first drive which otherwise was a sure TD.

What I saw today was a lot of Cal DBs making plays.

Crosby, Lopa, & Harris were the Flying Studs. Phenomenal level of play. PBUs out of nowhere.

Front 7 also brought the heat, and it helped a lot!

Quimari Shemwell deserves a big shoutout too. He was making plays and was a hair's breadth from along a few big ones too. Has a nose for the ball and that's gonna pay off at some point too

Our defense appeared to find its identity today. Loved the aggressiveness from our young DC. We really disrupted a pretty good QB today. Can't wait to see these guys in front of a fired up crowd at CMS (with the video board instructing them to make noise at the right time) against Clemson.

Hopefully our offense finds its identity by then too, with WRs making tough catches much less easy ones and our play calling finding a rhythm and keeping our opponents off balance with misdirection and a less predictable run/pass mix. We did seem to do a much better job protecting Sagapolutele today.

I really don't think we did a very good job of protection RKS today. On most passing plays he still had barely more than 1 second to release the ball. I watched the Texas-Ohio State game after our game and was amazed at the time Arch Manning gets to throw. He typically has 8 to 10 seconds of solid protection. If JKS had that, I don't anyone could beat us. At the very least our passing game and our offense overall would be a helluva lot more effective.

True, I was comparing this week to last week, not comparing Cal to Texas. We had glimpses of good offense today. The two TD plays off playaction in the red zone, one with a crossing pattern, the other with Sagapolutele rolling left for an easy pitch and catch.
Muhammad running out of the pistol was great (or we could just have Sagapolutele under center) . The toss to Muhammad outside was great too. We just didnt see it again. Reminded me of our late offenses with Tedford. A lot of variation, but not sticking with what works and still somehow being predictable at the same time.

Lopa is going to bring us a lot of joy this season. Did I see a Cal tattoo on his arm? That's awesome if so in these days of the transfer portal.

I thought the same thing about Mohammed...he sure reminds me of Lynch.

Our OL and offensive play calling are going to give me an ulcer.

Hutchings said after the game that he felt his strategy in the UCLA game was too conservative. I agree. Win or lose, I'd rather see a defense that puts more pressure on the opponents' QB. Make them beat you.

with a number of F yeahs. My only concern with him is he has no regard for his body. Need him on the field.

Especially with this roster. We are athletic but wild in the linebacker+secondary. Let the boys run and make plays. They aren't going to magically figure out discipline, angles, fits, and communication in the middle of the season.

They sure as hell better figure these out! What's the point of coaches if they can't get the players to improve on these things?

At one point in the second half, Klisiewicz came in at RT for Jimothy Lewis, who was not playing particularly well. Shortly after, Cal ran a (often hoped for on this site) pitchout which gained good yardage and I noticed Klisiewicz was out leading the blocking. If we finally have some linemen who can run as well as block on the line, this could be a good indicator for the future.

I'd take JKS over Arch Manning every day of the week. I just wish JKS had the kind of protection from his OL that Manning does. If he did, we'd be virtually unbeatable.

Did Lewis get injured, or did they just want to try a change?

Is it my imagination, or is Klisiewicz maybe a future all-conference player?

Daniel Harris' performance yesterday was absolutely worthy of mention, as was Tuitele's.

Solomon Williams did some good things; as did Nate Burrell (hope he's not injured again).

I seem to be one of the few people who are singling out Crosby. I don't know, it just seemed he was very often around the play, either run or pass. I will be interested to see his PFF grade.

Adam Mohammed had about four-yards-per-carry in each of our first two games. Was very hard to bring down a few times yesterday... it was awesome. Imagine his stats if we were actually opening holes for him, or if the defense weren't expecting us to go to him most every first down.
