Some Syracuse Game Thoughts (Also, Fire Somerville)

I was busy with work during the game but had it on in the background. That said, from what I saw and what I remember of the game, the Cal defense really won the game today. It stepped up big (3 picks by Kingston Lopa!) when it counted.

As well as the defense played, the offense was just terrible. Cal doesn't have time for the rookie OC to get his bearings. He needs to be replaced ASAP. Whether he's tarmacked, asked to assist Rolo as Rolo takes over OC duties, or given a different role altogether, he needs to relieved of his duties as OC.

Somerville is just horrible at playcalling. There's no deception whatsoever, so opposing defenses can anticipate exactly what's going to happen without worrying about being burned by overpursuing. Worse, he's wasting a lot of good talent while forcing JKS to run for his life. JKS will get hurt or opt to transfer to a school that will protect him and give him more than one second to get rid of the ball.

What absolutely killed me was when Cal had the ball at the 2 minute Timeout in the first half. It quickly surrendered the ball to 'Cuse with what was essentially a 3 and out after the Timeout. The defense managed to hold the Orange to a 3 and out and got Cal the ball back with about a minute to go. Somerville managed to go 3 and out, again! Holy flarking snit!

Finally, I looked at the pre-season ACC ranking after the game. Syracuse, Wake Forest, and the Furd are the only ACC teams on Cal's schedule this season that were ranked below Cal in the pre-season ranking (https://theacc.com/news/2026/7/28/miami-picked-as-preseason-favorite-to-win-2026-acc-football-championship.aspx). That Cal won on the road (3 time zones earlier, no less!) is something about which I am excited. Unfortunately, given that the Orange is an ACC doormat, tempers my excitement over the win.

At the end of the day, however, Cal is now 1-1. If it can manage to finish with a .500 record (or better!) on the season that will be a pleasant surprise (after the collapse at Memorial last Saturday). But in order to do that, Somerville will likely need to replaced.

Agree with everything. Except maybe demote somerville or have Rolo swap with him or something. Yeah okay it's not Rolo's playbook that was installed but this 30 yo kid is way out of his league, the overarching playcalling has been horrible, not to mention specific failures (such as the <1 min to go with 3 time-out total waste of a possession at the end of the first half), and we of all schools do not have the luxury of him learning on the job with a new HC.

Watch out, the once Wilcox-apologist oski will come to condemn your negativities, as he has done in other threads.

Really felt the "Tosh" Bears on the field today besides all the mistakes. Playcalling adjustment by Hutchings was a breath of fresh air and got a ton of pressure. Tackling was better. A lot of dawgs on defense just have to hope the blown coverages and mistakes peter out. OL still rough but maybe a little better. Don't know about Somerville still. Looked uninspired and the weak link by far early but did open up and see some changes later, which maybe is forgotten with those brutal drops (Kyion Grayes with the game on the line...). Still agree the weakest link on this team

Team run and shoot!

Don't change anyone's title. Just assign Rolovich to call offensive plays with input from Somerville, instead of the other way around.

like i said in the other post, once we got the ball with under two minutes i said the only way we could lose was if we ran he ball three times in a row with their three time outs and guess what we did. gave the ball back in under 20 seconds.

On the offensive side, yes.

But the defense gave up only 6 points in the 2nd half.

I know its a boomer "get off my lawn" kind of comment but I'd just like to see them huddle better. The O huddles like a bunch of kids playing ball on the street. I don't care which style of huddle they do (circle or QB back to D) but at least look like you know what you are doing. Good huddle discipline is good for the O because its easier on a QB to speak to the players. Its better for info security. It affirms which receiver/running back is in what role.

That's some good lemonade. Thank you.

JKS - The double, triple clutching hurts him. He also needs to learn to step up in the pocket to prevent getting hit from behind.

3rd qtr - Cal didn't call any timeouts to let the defense catch a breather and make adjustments while Syracuse took their opening long drive for a TD?

4th qtr - Neither Tosh or anyone on the defensive staff had the presence of mind to call a timeout when Syracuse was lined up and Cal wasn't? Cal got flagged for 12 men on the field.
