Punting

The Good:

Really liked how Angus hung in there under pressure. And he is good at putting the punts inside the 20.

The Bad

The blocking for Angus was awful. The coverage was not good. The Cal players would surround the punt returner and then watch him field the ball and take off. Did they think he had signaled fair catch or that he couldn't field a bouncing ball? The "halo" they gave the returner was too big. That fake punt appeared designed to take advantage of our unique punt defense.

Kicking

Glad we made our extra points. The missed FG was tough. The kickoffs looked solid - we only had one returned.

I noticed the same thing about players seeming to be out of position during punt coverage. But I think those issues are relatively easily correctable. There should be enough film to study from the last game…

The Really Bad is coaching and decision-making. Special Teams are not that difficult for smart kids. And our kicker is not accurate. He's o-fer beyond 40 = Punt time in close games. Let him practice against Wagner.
