My old high school was one of the ones named in the article. I can't speak for all the schools, but for that one it's not a funding issue. It's the changing demographics more than anything. They may no longer have a varsity football team, but the badminton team absolutely dominates.

No doubt, in the inner Bay, where many self selecting ethnic groups have way different priorities from the traditional Real Murkun norms, but $$$ are the limiting factor for the oldest districts where infrastructure and retirement costs eat up a large chunk of $ allocation. Also, old farts like me have held onto homes for decades and tax $ shrink relative to costs of everything.

And don't for a minute believe the recruiting has not been rampant for decades. It's business, as the article also points out.

I played at DeAnza a long time ago, Albany has always had trouble in HS football as far as I can remember. I hated playing them because it's just not fun blowing out teams that struggle like that.

The article also points out that the school districts
themselves are in a shambles with budget issues and it's reflected in its facilities and resources and teams. Losing 6 programs though is shocking…. This happens in places like Maine where I live now where several 8 kid leagues exist but the Bay Area….but all this stuff costs lots of money now

Yeah, TCAL hasn't really had good football teams for years besides El Cerrito and Salesian - other sports haven't been that great either.

When I was at DeAnza we were pretty ok. Our running back was Dee Moronkola who ended up going to washington state as an All-American DB. We were loaded with Div 1 guys, so was El Cerrito when I was there. We always had fun games with El Cerrito. My Sr year we beat em 73-35 heh.

Was that when EC had Jamir Miller, who played at UCLA and NFL. And Drew Gooden for basketball?

Cal has a commit coming next year who's dad played at Salesian & EC

Jamir Miller was about 5 years before me at El Cerrito, not sure when Gooden was at EC. I remember EC's running back when we played them was Ayodele Mitchell, we actually became friends in JC. I use to play basketball against Raymond Circus King at the YMCA who if you remember went to Cal to play basketball.

"It's hard," said John Pangelina, coach of Tennyson in Hayward. "Private schools come through and they sweep the public schools of all their talent. They have the resources. They have the nice facilities that we don't have. We can't compete with that type of money."

pretty much says it all, same at the University level as well

when I played HS ball, we had ONE coach for varsity and ONE for JV .. now they have so many more, how can a small school pay for this

as an aside, Albany used to have some good teams back in the 50s, one guy at least played for Cal Pete Olson, a QB in HS
