You know how there are no attendants at gas stations, so you put the nozzle in and go into the attached convenience store to buy a snack or drink or use the restroom while it fills up?

Well, those days are GONE as of today. No more locking gas pumps because a reported THIRTEEN people had incidents where the gas kept pumping and caused injury or other damage.

That seems like a small sample to me, but enough now so that you will have to stay there in the heat, cold or whatever, while your stretch Hummer sucks up the gas for what seems like forever. Then, I guess you will have to park your car elsewhere while you go into the store or just forget the store altogether.

This is a stupid law and I'm really ticked off about it. I guess there's nothing we can do about this new "nanny law". I just heard about it and it put a crimp in my day for sure. Aaarggghhh!!!

[Yes, I do know that you can sometimes wedge the gas cap to keep the pump going, but I've had the pump spit out the cap and hit my car]

Hmm, that's funny because the stupid law has been in existence in Hawaii and I was wondering why. I always liked locking the trigger so I could do the squeegee thing. Oh well, it won't change your life or anything. At least I hope it doesn't.

As an Oregonian who used to be a Californian... I don't want to hear anything about your gas pump trials/tribulations.

*hrmph*

One thing I don't miss from moving to Oregon...pumping gas. I love our law here of mandatory gas attendants. Its actually freakin weird now going back home to the bay area and having to pump my own gas. Know whats even cooler than that...our gas is cheaper lol.

I heard it's the same with Jersey right? The Jersey Shore kids will pump your gas. Pump it pump it. Whoop! whoop!

Just wondering, are you supposed to tip those guys?

Well, I do a lot of driving and fill up quite a bit. It will not change my life, I guess, but it will be a new inconvenience for sure. I wouldn't mind a law that requires someone else to pump the gas (I've been to Oregon several times), but that's not part of the new law.

That sucks.

At least it will save me from those maddening episodes where I set the pump lock in place and start to walk away. *click*. "Goddamn it." Walk back, set it again. Get a little farther away this time. *Click* "Mother F****er!" Walk back, set it again. etc.

What percentage of those locks work correctly anyway? 50? 40?

Funny, that reaction is normal for out of staters! lol.

You can tip if you want, its not expected. I use to tip, when I first moved up here. I haven't done it in awhile now though.

edit: in fact a lot of times the attendants will turn down tips too, some gas stations don't accept them, kinda weird I know.

How about this....start pumping your gas.....halfway thru, stop pumping, carefully lay the nozzle down on the ground.....go into the place and get your snacks, lotto tickets etc...then come back, pick up nozzle and start filling up again......that outta pi$$ a lot of people off....

Apparently you've never pulled off I-5 in the middle of Oregon on a busy travel weekend with 1 attendant working about 30 pumps. Joy.

Yeah I bet that sucks. There's one gas station in Bend, thats super cheap and always packed. Its kind of annoying though. The attendant pumps your gas, then gives you a ticket with what the gas costs you, you then gotta walk in and wait in a huge ass line to pay for your gas. You can't even use your card at the pump. Yeah, I don't go there anymore, even if i pay a few cents more for gas. I like the convienence better.

It's only some pumps, and it will go back to normal once they get new handles (in 90 days):

not the California Legislature.

The State Fire Marshal ordered the removal of nozzle latches on an estimated 3,000 pump nozzles. As far as I can tell from reports from various sources, all of these latches are on nozzles manufactured by Vapor Systems Technology. Maybe VST needs improve their product's safety, or offer replacements. Are all gas pump nozzles made by VST?

Safety standards enforcement is one of the best purposes of government. No one likes unnecessary inconvenience. Convenience must give way to safety when a product has been shown to be unsafe. I agree that thirteen examples out of many thousands of daily uses is an insignificant amount. Where I would have a problem is if someone is maimed because a defective latch spilled fuel which was then ignited causing that someone to be burned.

O wait, that's right: us.

If you mean through higher gas prices, then probably yes. But taxpayers are not footing the bill to replace the nozzles

A stour rubber band or one of those small velcro straps ought to keep the gas flowing while you do your windows. Park and pee first, then pump.

As a kid alive during the introduction of vapor recovery hoods and when full service was still the norm (although self serve was getting more common), I remember on gas station attendant that had a hard time getting one particular nozzle in my folks car. The tank hole had its flap buried deep and that first generation vapor recovery nozzle would only go so deep. The attendant jammed a rubber stick (I'm not sure what it was for) in there. I'm not sure how safe that was, but at least the gas wasn't splashing back out the intake.

Is this the thread where I am supposed to point out that Oregon requires gas station attendants to pump gas in order to provide employment for former Duck football players since a UO degree (for the few players who manage to graduate) doesn't amount to a hill of beans? I keed I keed.

This news does disappoint me though. As someone who fills up a lot, the idea of having to hold the pump the whole time is very annoying. Maybe this is another way for the state to convince people to own more fuel efficient vehicles. Better MPG = fewer fillups.

There is, if not obvious to everyone by now, it should be, a movement afoot by state and federal governments to create legal and regulatory apparatus that forces citizens to live their lives for the benefit of the state. This will go on until we are all tired of posting it on BearInsider and actually DO something about it. Civic responsibility requires actions as well as words. To the extent you or any reader on this board is sick and tired of government excess or mind-boggling idiocy, you should run for office, and ask us, your fellow alum, to contribute to the cause. Words are not enough, when the government and the courts and the lobbyists on both sides of the aisle actually play, manage and officiate the game. The more complacency we demonstrate, the more our freedom as human beings will be curtailed.

Now, for a remedy to this shockingly ridiculous law, I suggest a soft tennis ball wedged in between the trigger and the handle. Worked for me in HS, will work for you at most stations. HAPPY PUMPING!

Hmm. This new law might be stupid, but at least it will diminish the frequency of sitting waiting for a pump to become available while the owner is off having lunch, taking a dump, or God-knows-what, for a half-hour or more.

If the pump latches weren't replaced for those 13 morons, each and every one of them would get a hold of an ACLU lawyer to sue the State. That's the government's way of finding employment for 13 more lawyers. A Win Win for everyone right?:hammer:

Use it at stations wherre the little holder has been removed. Works great. As I recall, it was handed out as a little advertising thing in Montana.

I remember when it was 25 cents. You could get half a tank for a dollar. Half a tank AND a glass, actually.
