I went to Alfreds in sf last night and had their 30oz tomahawk ribeye. It was fantastic and everything else was very good. I would recomend it to anybody that likes beasty steaks. Does anybody know of any other great steakhouses that might be a little bit off the grid?

Good to know. Had a TH ribeye at Spruce in Laurel Heights. Much better than my experience in Chicago. Newly opened El Paseo in Mill Valley, re-incarnated as a steak and chop house has a way to go. Speaking of go..........

Vic Stewart's in Walnut Creek, it's a converted train depot, in the same area as the Pac-12 HQ.

i'll never like Vic's since it effectively displaced Devil Mountain Brewery. I thought that brewery was awesome.

i seldom get steak any more plus i'm getting cheaper as I age so...I give zero stars to RuthsChris. The steak wasn't that good and I can't see charging $12 for a baked potato. Interestingly some of the best steaks I've had are from non-steakhouses. Japanese restaurants can do a really nice job on a steak.

Harris' in SF is a legit old school steakhouse.
Martinis, shrimp cocktails, low lighting and high-backed booths.

Stay away from Morton's, it's a relic.

i just had the tomahawk chop at Alexander's (down in cupertino) last weekend, not bad. their wagyu beef is quite good, pricey joint, but delicious. kind of a fusion restaurant though...

+1 - u stole my post! To date haven't seen a bone in filet elsewhere, in NYC, etc

- Harris is a good runner up
- Izzys best bang for the buck (steak + 2 sides for $30)
- Lesser known: Marin Joes porterhouse for 2

And if it's not just steak, House of Prime Rib, near Harris on Van Ness - like Izzys a good value @ $40 all in. Aahhhh...the zeppelin of meat...

It's okay but I found Alexander's a little too precious and expensive. My wife ordered some Japanese beef which was close to what I paid for my first car.

One of the best steaks around is at O'Chame on 4th St in Berkeley. Wagyu beef with rice and greens for $26.

Little hole in the wall, in the lakeshore area of Oakland is Prime spot Bar&Grill. Not much choices but the Rib Eye is a killer. When Don Nielson was in the lake Merritt area..this was one of his hangouts.

It's on Grand Ave right across the street from the 76 station.

One of my favorite restaurants in SF is Il Pollaio. Great family-owned and operated place without pretension. It's known for their chicken, but they make great steak and pork chops entrees at very reasonable prices.

We tried to get in there just for that steak but couldn't make a reservation because we had a party of 17. I will definitely be trying it sometime soon though.

Sorry, no experience with Bay Area Steaks. I went on travel to Fort Bliss, TX for couple days and drove out to Indian CLiffs Ranch east of El Paso. Steaks were great, atmosphere excellent. http://www.cattlemanssteakhouse.com/

Bourbon Steak (Michael Mina) in the St. Francis is my new favorite 'upscale' steakhouse with Izzy's being a tried and true favorite 'neighborhood' place.

If you want a steak in Napa Valley, my fav is the bistecca alla fiorentina for two at Tra Vigne. IMO, just an average place for food, but that steak is excellent. Only on Friday nights.

with great steaks.

For my money, the best true carnivore's steakhouse is the Epic Roasthouse on the Embarcadero in SF. Huge, well grilled steaks, a killer prime rib, and generous pours of drinks.

So,why are steaks at places like Alfred's better? Because they use dry-age beef. Last year I got intrigued and did a little internet research. I found out that there is a relatively new process on the market. It's a seal-a-meal type of machine and bag, but the special bag has a membrane that lets moisture out and does not let air in. I bought the machine and the bags, bought a large rib-eye roast at Costco, sealed and aged it for three weeks, then cut it up into steaks. Wonderful -- just like the very expensive steak houses but I can bar-b-que them at home for a fraction of the cost. Here is a link to a video on the process. Enjoy!

Does House of Prime Rib count as a steakhouse? Cause for my money, that was the best meat I've ever had.

The original Alfred's was my grandfather's favorite place... great memories... where I had my high school graduation dinner... and my first apartment in SF post CAL was on Taylor and Vallejo just above Alfreds (when it was on Broadway). Haven't been since it moved, glad to hear it's still good!

Interesting. When my wife and I married our apartment was at the top of the Broadway steps. We walked by Alfreds many times and looked at the meat displays in the window. Our collective wallet did not have the courage to go inside. We did dine at the counter at the old Vanessi's on Broadway almost every week. The calf liver steak there was unequaled.

But for the best bistecca, my money's on Ristorante Il Focolare, Montagnana, Montespertoli (Toscana...near Firenze).

Prettay, prettay, prettay good...pretty good.
