The school is releasing requested documents to the media; this has nothing to do with the NCAA.

What Oregon bought from Lyles. This is a response to a freedom of information request sent to Oregon from media outlets when the Lyles story first broke. The NCAA wasn't involved then.

You don't think the NCAA currently has any interest in these documents, regardless of their level of involvement at the time?

the vest's emails were a public record request by the media. that didn't turn out well.

If USC and TOSU, Auburn, and UNC are any indicator it will take more than a year to build the case for sanctions against the Ducks. Violations of NCAA rules are so widespread that the enforcement division is way over-stretched. Many coaches have decided that it pays to cheat--has it hurt Kiffin's career path? How about the UNC coach who cheated at Miami and is now running a dirty program at UNC?

The released stuff may be the result of media FOIA requests - but included is some limited correspondence between the Oregon Athletic Dept and the NCAA. (Basically it's just the emails showing the NCAA asking for specific documents.)

There's not a whole lot to learn from what has been released...

au contraire.....it will provide the background and basis for the investigations. For example if there are 12 recruiting packages purchased for $500 each and just the one for $20k....that will add more fuel. If e-mails/texts are revealed showing contact between Lyles and UofO beyond what other recruiting services were doing...more fuel. and that would just be the on target stuff. mix in the unexpected stuff and you have some embarrassing entertainment.

Because of course no one had ever thought to bend or break the rules before 15 years ago. That would just be gauche.

Butch Davis was never even accused of cheating at Miami. He took over a program on probation that had been decimated by the antics of Dennis Erickson and rebuilt it to an elite level in a short time.

That is effing laughable what they got from Lyles for 25k.

The 25,000 W9 to Fishbein sounds extremely fishy (no pun intended). Would love to get more info on that, as well as the letter sent.

I wonder how much he charged other schools for the same services. That would be very interesting to see. Probably more like 5K-6K.

Wow.

"A national recruiting package purchased by Oregon in February 2010 that included the player profiles for 140 players with the heading "Player Profile 2011" is made up of virtually all 2009 high school graduates...

A search of all the players listed revealed that virtually all graduated from high school in 2009 with a few graduating in 2010 or 2008...

One of the recruits in the package dated 2011 was defensive lineman Nosa Eguae out of Mansfield Summit High School in Arlington, Texas. Eguae signed with Auburn in 2009 and started 11 games for the Tigers last season, including the BCS National Championship game against Oregon. He had four tackles, one for loss against the Ducks."

Wtf?...So far i don't see a smoking gun. Bad business decisions, yeah... but we paid for this dickhead's services too. Save your breath....I know we didn't pay 20+K for a summary an eight grader could author but nothing seems to be conviction level material yet.

Luckily, the floaters will probably screw up in their follow-up responses or elsewhere in their "compliance" department. I guess it is only a matter of time

Really? $25k for useless, outdated player profiles doesn't raise suspicion?

This looks pretty bad to me.

It appears that the letter is linked below the story. But it was obtained directly from the attorney of Fishbein (Lyles's prior employer), not through the foia request to UO.

So here's the curious part. UO sends a W9 addressed to Lyles at Fishbein's company (Complete Scouting) because UO thinks it paid CS $25K in March 2010. Four months later, Fishbein goes to his lawyer to write a letter saying that Lyles had been let go in Jan. 2010 and that CS neither provided any services to UO nor received any payment. OK, fine, the W9 was sent to the wrong party . . . a paperwork error by some pencil pusher at UO. Better get it straightened out. But why would Fishbein hire an attorney to write that letter??? If I'm Fishbein, I call UO to straighten it out, send them an email, whatever, but no way do I go spend hundreds of dollars to have an attorney write the letter over a paperwork error! Unless . . . Fishbein knows there is some monkey business going on and maybe he himself is be in legal jeopardy. To use your words, it is very fishy. Something doesn't add up. A journalist needs to call Fishbein for comment. What does HE think happened between Lyles and UO?

Here's another view, quoted from a rival site:

"If this sounds too stupid to believe, well, that's because it probably is. The merely unflattering explanation is that Oregon was ripped off by a con man who stuck the Ducks with a shoddy product embarrassing, maybe, but there's no NCAA rule against being gullible. The more cynical assumption is the same as it was when Lyles' name first slithered up from the gutter of the recruiting trail in the spring: That Oregon found a loophole in the system that allowed it to "legally" funnel money to a middle man (Lyles) in exchange for access to certain recruits it already knew more than enough about.

In Lyles' case, he served as a friend and "mentor" to a pair of current Duck speedsters from East Texas, a) Heisman Trophy finalist LaMichael James, who invited Lyles to Orlando on Lyles' dime as a guest at the Home Depot Awards Show last December, and b) former five-star recruit Lache Seastrunk, with whom Lyles reportedly lived in the same house on at least a part-time basis during Seastrunk's senior year in high school. Those two, the Ducks kept pretty effective tabs on despite the distance. (Starting quarterback/Houston native Darron Thomas, too.)

The rest of Lyles' offerings? As far as legitimate recruiting is concerned, they were just ghosts. But that doesn't necessarily mean Oregon didn't get from them exactly what it paid for."

I would wager that even some amateur recruitniks like the ones who frequent this site would have taken one look at Lyle's info and laughed in his face. And Oregon wants us to believe that Chip Kelly and a group of assistants who live and breathe this stuff were fooled by it? Talk about selling a shoddy product.

edit: Chip and the other coaches must have been so upset about being swindled that they felt the need to text and call Lyles more than 400 times...

i very much doubt oregon would pay the guy $25k for a list of 2010 recruits before they got delivery or at the very least wouldn't have demanded their money back. this is obviously a payoff for delivering seastrunk

I'm going to channel my inner duck fan and come up w/ the following explanation for why UO paid $25K for bios on 2009 graduates:

"You see, we also recruit JUCO's, so getting some info on 2009 grads that we can then pursue after they spend some time at a JUCO is of immense value. Nothing wrong with that - in fact, others should be doing it too."

How'd that sound?

why would the care about high school info when there is tons of better info on the players due to the fact they play JC competition which is at a higher level and should tell a college more about a player's ability.

Maybe the bill was $2500.00 and someone in the payroll department misread the bill and thought it said $25,000.00 and they're just now realizing that they over paid the bill. Sounds like a simple mistake to me. I'm sure they are happy that it was now caught before others could think there was sort of hanky panky going on! :acclaim:

Typically arrogant of Chip to try and sneak this through the University's accounts payable system. Dude was coming off a season in which he had just been paid $1.8M and was about to get a huge extension. Pay your bribes out of pocket, in cash!
