PAC-12 AFFIRMS DECISION NOT TO EXPAND

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- In light of the widespread speculation about potential scenarios for Conference re-alignment, the Pac-12 Presidents and Chancellors have affirmed their decision to remain a 12-team conference. Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said, “after careful review we have determined that it is in the best interests of our member institutions, student-athletes and fans to remain a 12-team conference. While we have great respect for all of the institutions that have contacted us, and certain expansion proposals were financially attractive, we have a strong conference structure and culture of equality that we are committed to preserve. With new landmark TV agreements and plans to launch our innovative television networks, we are going to focus solely on these great assets, our strong heritage and the bright future in front of us.””

The line 'culture of equality' implies Texas wasn't playing ball. I'm curious whether they will revisit this if and when Texas rethinks.

Only a matter of time before Texas spins this to say that THEY were actually the ones to turn down the PAC.

I wonder though if this is because the Schools are just so completely deadset against it that Scott realized it was better to just kill the talk so we won't be used as leverage in keeping the Big 12 stable.

That line stuck out to me too. It's a strong message sent to UT that if it wants to join, it'll have to play by the Pac's rules. I think that's the right call. Preferential treatment did in the Big12, and the Pac16 is rightly concerned with a imbalanced conference structure.

LOL....ther BURDEN of Texas and their arrogant phuck tard ways was too much to bear....I kind of feel bad for Okie but I trust Larry Scott...he told Texas to eff of with their LHN for the 2nd time...and the Big12 is still a conference where NO ONE trusts each other....we'll still get the spoils one day.....hahahahaha... cause the LHN will FAIL !!!!

Of course they would. They'd revisit it next week if Texass caved. But I don't think they will. Not this season at least. They continue to try and get LHN off the ground and Okie is going to stew all the while.

Also zero reason now for Baylor to cave in to TAMU. Everything is on hold now which given P12 expansion was the catalyst to all this is not surprising. Only thing I can see that would jump start realignment this year would be if SEC decided to go balls to the wall and add TAMU, Mizz and the Okies and face Ken Starr in court. I give that a low probability.

BigEast is the only one left now with uncertainty. Logically they should merge with Little10 to form a superconference which would actually threaten P12's place in a 4x16 configuration. But with no incentive for Texass to compromise on LHN, are teams really going to be eager to join that pit?

I was getting excited, just like the last go around.

Oddly, I'm not one bit disappointed that this didn't happen. I'm actually looking forward to watching the drama unfold in that league. It's going to be pretty epic.

I feel kind of bad for OU - they now have no leverage with UT.

They had all sorts of big demands to day, and now UT can just say screw you.

"[W]e have a strong conference structure and culture of equality that we are committed to preserve." Doesn't that pretty much say it ALL?!!

Even a 10 year-old could read between the lines on that one. Texas was unwilling to accept the "culture of equality" that has been a hallmark of the Pac (and has contributed to its stability), so Scott told them to pound sand. OU isn't hosed that badly. This just means that the Big 9 adds another team (or 3) and plays on until OU either persuades the Pac to expand to 14 (which is what I thought would happen, and still am wondering why it didn't), or finds another conference affiliation superior to the Big 9.

Yeah...I"m a little surprised that we aren't taking OU/OSU but I"m not sorry we aren't taking Texas....at first I was for it but came to find them so insufferable that the money was not worth it....they are the destroyers of trust...

It's worse than that for Okie. They directly demanded the firing of Beebe. A commish that now sits there with no threat to his job. Look at how that worked for Nebraska, and they weren't half as rebellious as Okie. If Okie loses RRS due to an officiating call, they will seeth with the fire of 1000 red hot suns. Which is basically what Nebraska did. And they had a landing spot...

Oklahaoma's plan, that is. Just putting a few pieces together and letting one's imagination run wild -

SEC has offered Texas A&M, but A&M hasn't yet accepted. A&M has said that they are done with the Big 12, though.
Reportedly, Missouri has also been offered an invitation by the SEC. No confirmation or denial, yet. The Missouri Board of Curators is meeting Thursday, IIRC, to discuss conference affiliation.
Numerous major media outlets have reported that the remnants of the Big East (remember: Pitt and Syracuse are moving to the ACC) and the Big 12 have discussed merging into one conference.

Let's suppose:
the Big 12 schools minus Texas and Texas Tech, vote to dissolve the Big 12.
Immediately following that vote, everyone but Texas and Texas Tech (and probably Texas A&M and Missouri) apply to the Big East for admission.

Adding 6 Big 12 schools to the remaining 6 Big East football schools means that the combined conference reaches 12 schools for football membership and can hold a CCG.

Texas & Texas Tech are left as independent schools. Texas gets to hold onto their precious LHN and keep all of ESPN's money. Those two schools could be in a conference of their own and hire Dan Beebe as conference commissioner! They could schedule anyone they want (but who would want them).

No conference gets any bigger than 14 schools (ACC and SEC), balance is restored to the college football landscape, and Texas gets poetic justice served to them.

Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

CF2,

Thanks for the info. You got the scoop on BI. I kind of wanted this to play out a bit more. It was fascinating watching it play out in the media (like last year).

As others have stated, seems clear UT (and possibly OU) did not want to play ball and go for equal revenue sharing. Scott didn't even take OU/OSU so OU probably wasn't being completely cooperative either.

This will continue. There is no doubt. Now, does Beebe stay? The LHN? Will OU go independent? Stay tuned, as the Big12 turns...

BTW, let's not forget, the SEC made a similar statement a couple of weeks before inviting ATM.

Just when we think we're done, they pull us back in.

Agreed. Definitely the right call.

That earlier nonsense (probably spread by Dodds) about the Pac making huge concessions to Texas was rage-inducing. Them throwing their weight around is what's kept the Big 12 on the brink of destruction. If they want to join us, they'd better be willing to drop the BS.

Big winner here: curiously it's the B1G. It's the conference perhaps best positioned for the current environment and had the least options for expansion. So a slow down in realignment helps them the most. You'd think the Little10 would be a big winner, but I think this is just a death sentence reprieve. TAMU probably still leaves as an indy. Texass runs rampant and everyone else not named Baylor or TT still wants to exit. Which means we're going to do this again next year. Or earlier.

Big Loser here: clearly Okie. Talk about bad timing in making your demands and then losing all negotiating leverage. Next biggest loser: BigEast. BigEast basically got a leg amputated because everyone else was amped up on 4 Loko thinking something would happen which never did. Doh. ACC also a tertiary loser since now the Big East has no incentive to let Syracuse and Pitt out of their 27 month notification window.

Shizzat, you look back upon this train wreck and we (P12) caused a butt load of havoc... while remaining essentially unchanged. Irony thou art a cruel mistress....
