...on student athletes. They have to sit out a year upon transfer, can't transfer within the conference unless certain exceptions apply, have to sign a binding letter of intent, can't accept a Snickers bar from a university rep., etc. etc.

And yet, there's nothing codified to prevent what just happened to Cal (or limit the damages of such coaching transfers)?? It makes zero sense to me, even taking into account the long history of corruption and the now completely outdated basis for the NCAA.

I would hope that there is a new Tosh-rule, either Pac-12 or NCAA, that a coach cannot contact former recruits at all if the coach changes schools.

It's even worse when one considers that what the players receive is simply a one-year scholarship, renewed (or not renewed) at the option of the school. <a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="<a href="http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/"""""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/""""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/""""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/"""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/""""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/"""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="<a href="http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/""""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/"""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="<a href="http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/"""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/""" class="postlink " target="_blank"><a href="http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/""" class="postlink " target="_blank">http://"http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/"" class="postlink " target="_blank">This Taylor Branch article from the Atlantic discusses that (and other issues) at length.

The NCAA is like the cop covering his beat that pulls over to ticket a jaywalker while someone's getting bludgeoned on the other side of the street.

The NCAA's primary motivation is the preservation of the NCAA monopoly, with a cursory tip of the cap to the welfare of the student-athlete.

Not allowing a playoff, the bowl system, and oversights like this are pretty strong indicators of how weak/greedy the NCAA is.

Not to mention the 3 years it took to close the Reggie Bush case.

How is the "investigation" into Oregon recruiting going?

This falls under employment law and any rules the NCAA makes would be subservient to those laws.
