So it looks like we will sign 17 or so scholarship recruits this year when I believe we have 25 schollies to give. What do we do with those 8 extra schollies? Will we have less players on the team this year (ala USC) because of this and then have a massive class next year?

Note - I am happy with the players we got - I think the staff did a nice job to pull in the class that has signed up.

I'm still waiting to hear. Faxed my LOI at 6 am but not sure they can appreciate a 54year old athlete who runs a 5.9 40. Keeping my one good eye open and crossing the fingers that I still have. :gobears:

They were counting on attrition to get to 25. There's not that many right now.

A few walkons will likely get one year rides, I'm sure.

5.9 40 at 54 years old is pretty impressive. Probably 99th percentile.

These next two seasons are critical for Tedford. We already have some great DL guys on the roster. Win with the guys we have and the combination of that and the new stadium will bring in loads of recruits. If we don't, then Tedford's job will be in question and recruiting will be impacted.

A few more are going to come in, and probably use 2-4 for early enrollees next year. Also, a couple deserving walk-ons will get schollys. Jed Barnett says he's leaving due to financial reasons. Maybe give him 2 schollys. We're rich, b****!

I'm optimistic anyway.

So we signed 15 for this year, 2 EEs against last year, so do we still have 10 schollies? We will give these all to walk-ons and whatever last few good recruits we can rustle up? Given that depth is such a key to success over the course of a season, shouldn't we be looking to use all of these - even if it is for JC transfers? I know that players switching at the last minute makes it hard for the coaches to predict exactly what they will get.

sure this is a dumb question, but not familiar with how scholly $ works. if we don't give out all our schollies, is there no way we can reallocate this $ into another pool, say, an assistant coach fund? or does the school just not give the program credit?

Depth? 20-25% of our scholarship players at any given time are redshirting, theoretically available but rarely employed other than as practice squad fodder. I'd be more inclined to reward some walk-ons who play ST than throw a scholie to a project just to keep it from "going to waste". IMHO, the redshirt system is a huge contributor to the financial ills plaguing college FB. If eliminated, scholarship limits could be cut to 60-65 without significantly impacting game day performance.

Interesting development in Big Ten country. Imagine USC or UCLA's predicament with this rule in place. Hopefully this is implemented across the board. Good job Big Ten.

Mark Emmert wants the NCAA to adopt that approach.

Well, I suppose I should have said plaguing college sports rather than football. I assume most D1 football programs show a profit but almost none earn enough in football to cover athletic department deficits in other sports.
