Any way we could get a sticky - airfare trending/planning flights to Ohio State?

I'm planning on going but I'm also cheap and don't want to overpay on airfare. To that end, and being that the price of tickets will fluctuate and most of us probably don't make the California to Ohio flight too often, I think a thread tracking prices may be useful.

Plus it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a thread discussing general do's and don'ts, where to stay, where to eat, where to avoid, what traditions to see, etc type thread (and an easy spot for Buckeyes to join in). Any way we could get a sticky for it? I'll occasionally scan Kayak to nearby airports and post current prices, and Southwest as well. If there are other major airports I should consider let me know.

Would probably be good to cover both the SFO/Oakland and LAX/Burbank/etc fares as well.

3/29/12:
LAX to Columbus
Southwest: $255 round trip (bunch)
Kayak: $380 (Frontier, several)

San Francisco to Columbus
SW: $211 (SFO), $250 (Oakland)
Kayak: A lot

The Kayak prices are high now but as promotions start you'll probably see a few really good deals there. I set up a deal alert to let me know (tech savvy in this... um... nevermind)

well, there is a road trip forum here
http://bearinsider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=40, but very little traffic.

I'd agree - be great to share trip info. I can't recommend this site
http://matrix.itasoftware.com highly enough for airfare info. You've got to poke around a little to figure out the query syntax, but once you do, there are a number of options for flight info. And remember you don't have to fly into Columbus - Cincinnati, Cleveland, heck maybe even Pittsburgh and Detroit are possibles if you don't mind a little driving.

I've heard that hotels book up quickly, though. Best to get on that soon.

doesn't sound as difficult as actually get IN to the game! I wonder what our ticket allotment will be? Ohio State friends have shared that tickets to home games are nearly impossible/unavailable even for alumni..etc..and that as a result, there are nearly as many Buckeye fans OUTSIDE the stadium as inside..Any clues on tickets at this early stage? (I need two)..

i'm sure there will be a 5k-ish Cal allotment (in the nosebleeds, but it'll exist)

All the more reason to keep your Bear Backer donation level up (that's still the way the allocate away games, correct?)

I have heard it may be half that.

Don't we typically provide 2 sections at CMS for visitors? That's around 3k. We do give USC and UCLA (and furd of course) larger allotments, but I don't think even oregon typically gets more than the two visitor sections.

Is 2.5k that small of an amount for a big time program to provide for OOC? tOSU's motivation for OOC visitor tickets is probably how many they can get from us in the return game. Given that the Bay Area is a destination, Columbus is not, OSU is a bigger name problem, I would think that OSU's away demand at Cal will be higher than Cal's away demand at OSU.

Put another way - if they screw us on away tickets there, we can screw them back since @ Cal is the year after.

I agree but I don't think this should come up. I think / hope that this type of thing is negotiated when the series deal is signed.

The Horseshoe hold 102,000+. There will be tickets available. I have been to many, many stadiums throughout the country and have never purchased tickets before hand. I always buy just before gametime and have yet to play face value or higher. This works especially well with onesies and twosies. Anything more than four tickets together and I would make sure to have the tix lined up before the game.

I went to Neyland. I have a hard time seeing OSU being an easier ticket. Thats not really something I'm worried about.
