Quote:
Action: Cal quarterback Zach Maynard misses multiple spring workouts to take care of classroom responsibilities.
Reaction I: Coach Jeff Tedford has repeatedly stated that Maynard is not in trouble academically and is expected to be with the Bears when training camp begins, and at this point, we’ll take Tedford at his word.
Reaction II: But let’s make no mistake: This is unsettling news for the Bears. Maynard is Cal’s best hope at the most important position in years. At the same time, it’s not like he’s a polished quarterback (Luck, Barkley) who can afford to miss workouts anytime of year. To be the best player he can be … to improve on what he was last fall … Maynard needs every live snap he can get.
Reaction III: Above and beyond actually missing workouts is the matter of academics being a distraction. Assuming he’s eligible, Maynard needs to be as locked into football as possible as often as possible. And clearly, his academic situation is tenuous enough that he cannot be fully engaged mentally.
Reaction IV: All I’m saying is that it’s not unreasonable to think the academic responsibilities this offseason will make Maynard 85-90% of the quarterback he could otherwise have been in the fall. That differential could mean Cal wins seven games instead of nine, or six instead of eight. It’s a fine line, especially at that position.
