Awesome. This project was done the right way. The stadium is so much nicer aesthetically than Stanford's tin can.
When we return to Cal Memorial in September, there will be obvious differences, but it will feel much as it did before when we step into the seating bowl. Truly, aside from the Press Box, I think spectators will be hard pressed to find anything significantly different about renovated Cal Memorial vs. the original.
Sure, we can say that concessions, restrooms and concourse circulation will be better. But it will still feel like Cal Memorial.
Stanf*rd, on the other hand, basically rammed a boxy stadium into an oval hole. They paid little attention to the history or the aesthetics of the Old Gray Lady. They could have done so much more with the space that was afforded by the original footprint. And they settled for something that is alien to the site. You'll pardon me, please, if I say that it was a tragedy of little imagination and a desire to produce a workable stadium as quick as possible.
Cal did it right. The price of doing it right was a season away from home. I think that in a few years, we'll have been glad that Cal Memorial came out as well as it did, and that the worst part of the deal was that we spent the 2011 home season at AT&T.
