Wasn't the field lowered some four feet to alleviate any sight-line problems for fans in lower rows? How did they manage before when the bench was there?
Yes, the field was lowered by
4.5 feet (as per the Recirculated SEIR linked in my earlier post). In fact, the discussion on this very point was just before the discussion on the Andy Smith Bench, at the end of page 38.
I can't remember anyone complaining that their sightline was negatively affected by the ASB at anytime in the old configuration. The ASB was set close enough to the stands that it made no difference to the sightlines anywhere in the stadium.
Lowering the field by 4.5 feet means that leaving the ASB on the Cal sidelines will have no impact on sightlines for fans (read: students) in the lowest rows of Sections S and SS. It will also have no impact on anyone else in the lowest rows of Sections R, RR, T, or TT (sections closest to S & SS).
The new field perimeter walkway is about 2 feet wider than the original field perimeter walkway. I base this upon comparing images from StadiumCam.
The perimeter walkway is wider to accommodate both foot traffic and wheelchair traffic and placement (ADA accommodations). This will cut down on the space on the sidelines on both sides of the field. The sidelines in the old configuration were already some of the narrowest in college football.
If this is the real reason for moving the ASB, then say so. The arguments put forth for moving the ASB are absurd.
