Can somebody explain them to me?

I see 3 Cal rings.

Vereen was with us for 4 seasons.

2007: Vereen redshirted.

2008: Cal went 9-4.

2009: Cal went 8-5.

2010: Cal went 5-7.

Armed Forces Bowl win 12/07...get a ring even if you redshirt.
Emerald Bowl win 12/08

Third one is bit of a mystery but...4 year letterwinners get a Cal ring. He played 3 years I don't think they'd make an exception and it doesn't really look like those. Some bowl games have been giving rings as part of the "swag" for just appearing. With that in mind...could be the Poinsettia Bowl from 09.

OK, thanks for explaining.

Isn't one of those a Patriots ring?

2nd one from right is definitely a Patriots ring.

I had no idea the lower-tier college bowl games awarded rings as big and gaudy as Super Bowl rings

Interestingly, Vereen only played in one bowl game in which Cal won (the 2008 Emerald Bowl).

So I guess those rings are just handed out by the teams.

In the NFL too, apparently. Although I guess they probably call it an 'AFC Champions Ring' instead of a 'Super Bowl Participation Ring'.

Pretty sure CAL issues those rings themselves, which can be for bowl appearances.

I think I've seen Avery Seb. flashing his that looks exactly like one of Vereens, most likely for the Holiday Bowl appearance.

Yeah, but I'd argue that an AFC Championship is quite an accomplishment.

It's not the Super Bowl, but it's deserving of a ring.

On another note, Shane this morning tweeted his "serious respect" for Frank Ocean, the hip-hop singer who just came out as liking guys.

It is kind of rare for a current NFL player to do that.

(I know Scott Fujita is/was like the only player to show public support for gay rights.)

Agreed.

If memory serves, NFL division winning teams used to be awarded a fancy belt buckle instead of a ring. Gotta imagine that's no longer the case. Anyone know?

That's Billy Ocean.
