Sloan Sabbith is the incredibly hot and intelligent financial analyst character on "The Newroom". I was watching the episode from last week and noticed that while packing up her office she put her Cal diploma in a box. She had been fired for having an on air meltdown. Anyone else notice this?

Funny noticed the same thing when watching the same old episode tonight.

She has a nice role but the show blows. Bunch of boring lectures and dweeby actors muttering asides under their breath. Sorkin's written some great stuff-the facebook movie, west wing, a few good men- but this isn't very good.

The diploma said University of California, but it wasn't clear which campus it was from.

Having worked in DC, I HATED what little I could stomach of The West Wing. I think Sorkin's material works best when he writes about the thing he knows best, which is TV. Studio 60 was good, but The Newsroom, despite his preachiness, is better.

I agree with your assessment of the show. I keep waiting for it to get better...and it hasn't.

Sorry, but Lisa Olivia Munn, is a Sooner. Didn't go to Cal, unfortunately, but she is very, very Hot. BTW, I think The Newsroom is one of the best programs on tv.

Absolutely not true. I enjoy the show for its entertainment value and don't get caught up in sides. We can do that. :p

The lead role is a republican, and the show (usually thru Jeff Daniel's character) take a lot of shots a liberal causes, while the other characters take shots at Reps. Its an attempt to appease the center, and it doesn't work because the premise is stupid. News hosts that speak their mind are not novel, just boring. If you want opinions with your news, you can go to Fox and MSNBC. The show is 15 years dated. The irony is the ratings for network news makes today's newscasters essentially irrelevant.

BTW, Sorkin fired all the writers, and there is a good chance we won't see the program next year unless rating rebound.

Just as in West Wing Sorkin thought he should be President; here he thinks he should be in charge of all news. The premise-a lame one-is that journalism needs to get back to the "truth" not ratings; but of course that means Sorkin's version of the truth. The audience is treated like a bunch of idiots while the anchor-using real and fake clips-harangues and bullies us as to what is really going on in the world. What is even funnier is that everything the anchor reveals as the "truth" has already been revealed by those incompetent "real" journalists Sorkin hates. We already know all this!

I have to also say that Sorkin's banter -which was good in the facebook movie because there was a director which moved things along and because it fit the Zuckerberg character-here makes me want to reach through the TV and strangle everyone.

Quote:

"The writing staff was not fired, OK? Just seeing that in print is scaring the hell out of the writing staff. They are acting very strangely, they are coming to work very early I want the old gang back. It is a fantastic group of men and women to come to work with."

I liked The West Wing, but I never worked in DC. Just curious, what was it about it that you disliked? (I'm assuming some parts were WAY unrealistic.)

Unrealistic Gilmore Girls-like banter drove me nuts, but the worst thing was the lighting. What, nobody in government turns on the lights?

Even the so-called establishment media (like NPR) had significant discussions about the firings and that the show is in trouble. Next thing I am going to find out ESP actually sold 70% of the seats, or that Cal won the CEQA fight with the COB. I guess its the internet age but does all the media repeat itself and never fact check? Thanks for posting.

Unrealistic? My favorite was LA Law where a very small firm did everything from divorces to cutting edge tax law. In fact, specific attorneys seems to be able to handle 10 or so specialties with great competence. And those dramatic court room scenes? Anybody been to a trial? Most of the dramatic takes place outside the jury's view, and 99% of the stuff would make USC's band seem exciting. BTW, anybody know what percentage of cases get to trial more less an actual verdict? Television doesn't.

Odd isn't it that people expect realism from fictional shows? I guess if you want real dialogue watch reality tv - everything there is just like the "real' world. Even Real World.

One could argue that Newsroom is the most realistic fictional show on tv because it deals with actual and recent events. I like the premise of a semi-counter factual. Yes we all know essentially what happens, but this brings up the idea of what could have happened IF... Or why didn't we... Or how come no one...?

It is Sorkin's mental masturbation. What writing isn't? One either likes it or doesn't, but his stuff is usually well done. The West Wing Presidential debate between Hawkeye Pierce and Victor Sifuentes was brilliant, and was a discussion this country could have used IMO. Newsroom (at least) tries to deal with important issues, something that we certainly are not going to get out of our real campaign this fall. But thank god Fringe is coming back soon so I can get some realism. Walter is my role model for realistic scientists.

You make a valid point. I think my problem with The West Wing was that I thought that lots of viewers around America would actually get the impression from that show that Washington really works that way, and that it wouldn't help disabuse people's already weird beliefs about politicians and politics. Doctors, lawyers, and police probably feel similarly about doctor, lawyer, and police shows that portray their professions unrealistically. I suspect that barehanded catfishermen from Louisiana probably don't share those concerns.

I, too, look forward to the return of the incomparable Walter Bishop.

I hear you. I can only imagine how pissed monarchs get when they watch Joffrey in game if thrones.

Yeah, see your point. I can't think of a single entity that would think they are represented correctly - the barehanded fishermen excepted. Well...maybe teenagers and high school party movies. Those are exactly like we had in my HS - kind of Less than Zero meets Project X. What's happenin' hotstuff? DONG.

The Newsroom is a wonderful effort at revealing to the uninformed who writes the news and who reports it. With the advent of Jane Fonda into the series, we now find out what isn't reported or what is (for the sake of ratings). My only beef is the arguments that happen in the sight of the entire newsroom. Some stuff should be discussed privately.

Sorkin writes bang, bang. Snappy, quick dialogue. Some people go for it, some don't, but you're never bored. I especially enjoyed the back and forth between Will McAvoy and the black professor who happened to be gay, but was a backer of Rick Santorum. The professor basically told McAvoy to shutup and let him finish. So many times you wish the talking heads on TV would do just that to the moderator!

The newsroom is tackling topical subjects. Things that have transpired in the last three years or so. It's interesting to see how they develop a topic and then report it.

Also, I think the show was already renewed for next year? HBO has a habit of renewing shows early regardless of ratings.

IIRC, the Sopranos, Six Feet Under and Sex and The City had poor ratings their first season then went on to great success.

That and Sorkin's reputation. I hope it gets better and less convoluted.
