I'm pretty sure they marched into this formation rather than wrote it out like the do Ohio They're more than likely practicing your fight song (they play the opposing team's fight song before every game.

It will be nice to hear how they play Big C or Fight for California. Sorry to say that it might sound better than our own band.

Now I'm starting to understand New Yorkers dislike for Philly... Really? Diss our band? JT, Maynard and Sandy Barbour aren't enough? You wanna clown Oski next?

I'm from San Diego j*ck*ss. And your next illogical step will no doubt be that I like the Eagles. As people on this board know, I'm a Cowboy fan.

Yeah, I diss the band. Its a high school band. I reserve my frustration with JT and Maynard in another thread.

And I would never dishonor our Oski. He is untouchable.

Swiped from wiki-wiki, Cal band (middle age) origin story below.

Source:

Quote:

After the 1950 Rose Bowl against Ohio State University, the Cal Band decided to adopt its present high-stepping style after they discovered their performance looked lackluster in comparison to Ohio State's marching band.

I may go to the Aussie tomorrow. Going back and forth between watching in the comfort of home or commiserating with fellow Bears. You?

It's a bit of a Midwestern Band tradition to honor the fans of the opposing team by playing their fight song, especially if the opposing school's band is not performing on the field.

That's the spirit! Have a great trip. I hope that we pull the upset and you have the time of your life. If that happens, you will return to find me stumbling on the streets of New York in my Cal shirt.

There is a homeless person in hells kitchen who wears a Cal shirt often. I have considered swapping him for a Stanford shirt, the script looks so sad on him.

I think I've seen him! Lol. If you see him before I do, ask him where he got it. Problem with the Furd shirt is that you'd have to pay for one.

What part?

Air Force and most (if not all) Big10 schools do it...

The only school that does it in the Pac is UCLA. They play Cal's fight song before every game.

I would take one for the team. If we pull the upset, this is my promise. Of course it pales in comparison to Flukes' promise, but we each contribute in our own way.

Cal has done it for some OOC games at Memorial. I remember the Cal Band doing it for Minnesota in 2006 and maybe for Tennessee in 2007.

Oh I was wondering that! Do they also dress in baby-version of our colors and have a similar mascot as well to "honor" us? Makes sense now...

The Cal Band tried it back in '89 for the Wisconsin game. Probably one of the few times the Cal Student Section actually booed the Band.

It's a Big 10 tradition for the home team's band to play the opponent's fight song. It's a nice tradition that is done out of respect for the opponent and sportsmanship. Cal Band used to do that too, but stopped doing it several years ago, though on occasion they still do it (I think when they play Big 10 schools). Given the history of the OSU Band's influence on the Cal Band, it is a real shame we couldn't send the whole band to Columbus instead of just the Straw Hat band. Seeing both bands would have been totally awesome.

Why I'm sure they marched instead of writing it out or why do they play the opposing teams fight song?

If you meant the first one, it's an exact replica of your Cal logo as well as it doesn't form well to write it out while playing..

The latter, because it's a tradition in the B1G to do so.

According to the forum questionnaire to begin posting here, Oski isn't the name of the Cal mascot......so who is Oski?

Per Wikipedia --

Oski or Oski the Bear (named after the "Oski Wow-Wow" yell) is the official mascot of the University of California and has been a tradition at the school since making his debut on September 26, 1941 during the football season-opener against St. Mary's. Up until 1941, live bears were used as mascots. Nowadays, the bear's activities are overseen by the Oski Committee, which also appoints a new Oski whenever a replacement is required. Oski chugs beer through a hole in his right eye,[1], stands at 5-foot-7-inches, and wears a size 15 shoe.

I know that some bands play the fight song of other OOC schools (never rivals) as a good will gesture. However, I didn't know they would march in a formation recognizable to the other school, ie., script CAL. This is pretty cool. The tOSU band, like all Big 10 schools, is huge and loud.
