First of all, I was shocked to see CMS packed and early on to boot. I thought with our lethargic performance to date, A's playoff game on TV, Giants' game at AT&T, that we would get about 40K. Nope it looked like 63K. I know it wasn't but it looked like 63K. And you guys that were there BROUGHT THE NOISE. Our student section is nails for football. I wish some of the same students would bring it for basketball but that's another issue. Place looked FANTASTIC and shiny on TV.

Second, where was this intensity from our players and coaches all season, esp. the last two weeks? I was falling asleep in both the $C and ASU games. This game was FUN to watch. It's fun to see a real pass rush. It's fun to see McCain wreaking havoc on a good QB. It's fun to see quick hitters for long gains. It's fun to throw down the middle to the TE. It's fun to see the play match the crowd's intensity.

I really hope The Big Game is at night. That would be fun for me and I will be there at TT yelling my ass off. I will need some lozenges, though. But in the mean time, let's keep up the intensity up in eastern Washington next Saturday.

Just got back. Great game atmosphere. The crowd really got behind the team from the start. You wouldn't know we were 1-4 going in. The team was fired up. The student section was fired up.

Time for a reset for the season.

Was there. I lost my voice by half time. Crazy intensity all game. Loved it!

I couldn't agree more about the night games. The atmosphere was electric, and the stadium experience felt like everything the first three midday games were not.

I know this is crazy, but I think the 7pm kickoff was worth an extra touchdown or two to us. If Big Game is a night affair, I give us a much better chance of winning.

Lost my voice as well...beer fixed it later. Great game.

The new lighting was well done. Seemed like a high daylight temp, very blue-ish. How did it look on TV? I'm sure they adjusted for it.

It all looked terrific on TV. The place sure sparkled. I can't wait to see it for Furd. If we play inspired like this, which is completely opposite of what was going on last week v. ASU, this could turn around. Let's just keep up the intensity and see where this takes us.

A big applause to all who attended the game. You guys are real winners, sticking with the team through thick and thin. Wish I could be there.

This stadium was made for night games!!
There was a beautiful sunset, which made the usual ascent up the stadium very enjoyable. The night shots of the Golden Gate Bridge were spectacular as well. Throw in a fired up team and a phenomenal performance by the crowd and this was one of the most enjoyable Cal games in years.

It was downright awesome. The feeling was electric. The student section was tops. The " Go from the Students, and the " Bears " from the rest was the best I have heard in awhile. Being there was so worth it. They announced 57,000. Go Bears!!!!

The stadium was loud and the crowd had great energy tonight. Go Bears!

I actually feel bad for the people staying away as a form of protest. Being at this game was just so much fun. Energy was amazing. I know there's a strong "I'll cheer when I have something to cheer about" theme from many on this board, and that's certainly their right. But i must say, the crowd was with the team from the beginning and at some point the team just seemed to embrace it and play with an intensity that's been missing for most of the season. It's at least a possibility that having large crowds show up and support the team will get the desired result (wins) more than waiting for the team to perform first and then showing up. Just my two cents. Going to go bask in the glow of a great night.

I love how you always start threads about crowd support and stadium atmosphere!

As for the crowd, the south end zone was about half full, the visitor section in the southeast corner was also not full, and of course the ESPs weren't full, but I suspect you rarely see the ESPs on the TV camera angles from the press box. But otherwise, most of the rest of the stadium looked pretty full. Maybe 52K?

Re team intensity, one thing you might have missed on TV: during the commercial break before the start of the 4th quarter, the entire team gathered ON the field for some sort of inspirational words, and the whole team was jumping up and down. They seemed determined to bring the intensity all the way through the end of the game.

I got to my seat just as the players took the field and there was clearly something electric in the atmosphere. There was a level of excitement that had been absent the first 3 games.

Also, I'd like to emphasize what has already been said several times here: Memorial looked AMAZING at night. The lighting and sunset were just perfect.

This was the most satisfying home game in at least a couple years.

That 4th quarter huddle with the players all fired up is something that has been lacking for awhile... better later than never, but I hope it continues

I think the fact that this game was at night, against an instate rival we are very familiar with on various levels compared to some AZ juco, makes a world of difference. It was awesome.

Great job all.

Can't get enough of night games, to be sure. It's just an intimate, intense atmosphere that one can't fully describe. Tonight was heaven.

Another benefit. With all the noise, the Hill folks were probably really pissed off. On the telecast they mentioned the sound system, saying it was used to amplify the crowd noise.

Agree with you all. The intensity and fire from EVERYONE was so awesome to see. In college football that is worth a few touchdowns! Congratulations! Loved watching the players still jumping around and signaling to the student section after the game.

Anyone know when they announce a time for the furd game?

As an Old Blue, I don't like night games, as a rule. However, the atmosphere last night was electric. It was one of the best days, or nights, I can remember at CMS, and that goes back to the mid-60s. The student body was superb, the fans were into the game, and the team responded. I'm reconsidering my opposition to night games. If they are going to be like last night, bring them on! I'll be there.

12 o'clock starts just suck. It is too early. The fans have trouble getting to the stadium on time, are sleepy, the sun makes us more drowsy and there is no time to get drunk, attend the pregame rallies and get fired up beforehand.

The later the start the better.

Even the rainy night game against SC in 2007 in the middle of our collapse was electric.

That is exactly what you saw yesterday...

Cal fans (especially night games) ALWAYS come out to cheer. ALWAYS. Then they die out or rev up depending on what they see...

For example, the stadium CLEARLY was given something to cheer about when Bigelow started.

Then Cal drove 66 yards for 3, made a few stops after the 7 points, and scored again... They gave the stadium something to stay excited about.

The idea that the fans just sit around and decide to disengage is stupid. If fans think there is HOPE they will go nuts... if not, they will do nothing. Look at the super loud games against crappy teams (like WSU in 2007).

It was a blast - I agree with others that this was the most fun I've had at a Cal game in several years. My wife is an SC grad so the UCLA game is her favorite Cal game of the year which certainly helps.

I think that the fans fed off the energy displayed on the field. It's easy to blame the fans for a lackluster atmosphere but early this season it felt like the players weren't that into it and I think it takes the fans out of the game. The players were super amped and repeatedly gestured for the East side of the stadium to stand up - we were more than happy to oblige.

Based on my experience walking around the neighborhood before the game, I think some of it had to do with the students and their fraternity and sorority sisters and brothers coming up from LA to root for UCLA. There was a lot of friendly intermixing that motivated the home crowd. There was a lot of drinking, dancing and rocking coming from the frat./sor. houses that was pretty upbeat. The energy was there in the streets all over the place. And then that beautiful sunset leading into game time and the temperatures stayed moderate. I would be all for night games if I could assure that they would always be that nice. And those uniforms are perfect for night games. I'm up for a 5:00 start for the furd. I think that will still be a cool starting time. Remember how the stadium rocked for the Tennessee game in '07 and that was a 5:00 start.
