Why do people want Wilcox for HC?

Aside from the 52 points his d just gave up to Oregon, take a look at Tennessee's 2011 record, tons of points given up. He doesn't exactly appear to be some defensive master mind. And Boise didn't exactly play the toughest competition when we was there. AND he was in the middle of the whole Sark/Trosh thing. It's very unlikely he was oblivious to it all, and if we was then he's clueless. Seems like one of the worst candidates in my opinion.

How can you hold wilcox responsible at all for the Tosh situation? He owes Cal absolutely nothing. I pray that if we bring in new coaches they kill to bring in great assistants and do whatever is necessary to win recruiting battles.

I never said he was responsible or that he owes Cal anything. I said he must have known what was going on and personally I wouldn't want to see him as our next head coach.

I'd be upset if he became our next coach. Heck I'd be upset if he was interviewed for the job. Right now, he just seems like one of those guys that would 'feel' good to an AD. But to me I've seen nothing to suggest that he would be a good head coach.

We would have to give him a constant supply of Chap-Stick, too. Don't know if he deserves such a perk.

I have no idea why people suggest Wilcox. Maybe because he coached here and has followed the steady progression you'd expect of someone to get to HC status. I wouldn't want him as a HC just because I don't think he's shown enough.

The situation of last year... he did what was necessary to bring a player he worked with and later turned into a recruiting monster into his fold. I don't begrudge him for that.

Agreed, I am not excited by him at all. I don't hold any grudges against him (though if he brought Tosh with him I see that as a big negative).

What kills me is watching Arizona play Stanford, I was impressed with what Rodriguez has done there. He was a pretty big name coach. Why do we think we cannot get a name coach when other Pac-12 teams that are not USC are able to? Not saying that is what I want, just that we shouldn't dismiss it.

if he brought Tosh with him it would be negative because you hold a grudge against Tosh, or you believe Tosh would not be a valuable addition to the staff?

Rodriguez was a "pretty big name coach" who was out of a job, not because they lured him away from some place. "Name" is very subjective-because 80% of the people on the board have heard of someone doesn't matter much to me. Would you rather have Steve Addazio or Bobby Petrino (and dismissing the mistress stuff for the discussion)? Half the board would say "Steve who" and "who cares about Temple," but if we talk about him as the former Florida OC, then there is interest.
But I do agree with the point that when this process does happen, its a very different world than 10 years ago, starting with the new facilities and success of the last decade, and following with the revenues of the TV contracts and Pac-12 Network. Dismissing anyone not named Saban, Myles, Mayer, Hoke or Kelly should be done cautiously...

This sort of breaks my vowed week long moratorium on calling JT to be fired, but...

Wilcox for HC indeed took a hit last night, but Manny Diaz's was all but destroyed. His Texas defense has been shockingly mediocre all season long and they got completely exposed against WVU. With nearly the same players as the top 10 defense last year, I would guess his stock is absolutely plummeting.

If you want to make a case over the course of the season regarding a candidate, I guess that has some traction. But I hope no one who has any Cal authority is making any one game decisions-this is about bodies of work. I've heard way too much about Diaz from people in the know to dismiss him as a candidate...

Sooooooooooooo this! If SB even thinks of hiring him she should be fired.

There are plenty of good HC candidates out there. Wilcox was intriguing because of the counter-espionage nature of giving it back to the dogs. But that should never be our main reason. Personally I think Wilcox is going to be a good HC at some point. He has improved UWs D, the juggernaut Ducks notwithstanding. He has Cal ties. The reason he wanted Tosh is that he knew and worked with Tosh at Cal. In the end Wilcox was simply trying to make UW better. Don't we want somebody like that at Cal?

The multi-billion dollar industry that is college sports is way too competitive to hold grudges. There is way too much at stake to be a "purist".
