Yes another thread, Derrrnit.

Cal should never play day games.

EVER.

Anyone who wants to claim noon starts is tradition; Not winning and no Rose Bowls is a Cal tradition, too. Want to keep that?

The stadium, despite that some of our lazy fans who claim they cant pull it together to show up, still fills up and is absolutely nuts at game time.

There are schools that never play at night, there are schools that never play in the day... Memorial is a late afternoon/night venue.

BTW, I was absolutely useless today, but yesterday, I went on a hike, walked the dog, went shopping, watched the 'mer'cuz cup racing, got to watch a good bit of football...

Bottom line....if you're Alabama, Texas, tOSU, Florida, or LSU, your fans are fired up no matter when you play. Those places can get away with day games.

Memorial is a night venue not because it's inherently better at night, but because we don't have that kind of fanbase. Playing at night makes a difference in how plugged in our fans are.

And we need every advantage we can get, so I hope our administration was paying attention and lobbies for as many night games as we can possibly get. (although we may be blocked by what TV wants)

I know people like how sunny and warm Memorial is during the day, but maybe we can play more of those games once we get to a damn Rose Bowl.

All I know is the gold jersey's look great at night.

Night games allow more fans/families to attend; doesn't interfere with soccer matches.

Night games also allow for proper, extensive pre-partying and marinating = LOUD stadium.

Start times are dictated by TV, schools probably have very little (if any) input.

My favorite game was CAL vs. WSU 2005 . Ayoob was our QB, he played magnificent that night, brought us back and sealed the deal with a long pass to Cunningham for the go ahead. Wish more of the games took place during the evening. The Bears definitely play better during the later games when it cools off. Crowd seems to get more involved in the game as well.

Tell me the last LSU home day game.

How often does Arizona or ASU play day games?

There are reasons, but they dictate when they play.

The AZ schools probably play at night since it might be 115 degrees during the day. Probably more of a safety issue than the schools dictating that they want night games (I doubt the TV crews want to cover a game in that heat also).

Within the conference, I don't see Cal having much of a say. If they did, maybe we wouldn't always have to wait 2 weeks before a game to learn the kickoff time.

Even LSU has been foiled by TV apparently:

I don't mind the 5:00 starts either.

Cal / Oregon 2006
Cal / Tennessee 2007

I think they started at 5:00.

With the team practicing in the cooler mornings, I really think they struggle playing in the heat of the day. The team looked much less gassed last nite than against USC and asu.

You are correct. Both of those games were 5:00 PM kickoffs.

Oregon plays a LOT of night games and there's no 115 degree heat in Eugene Oregon. Explain that one.

Clearly they are dictating terms of some kind to the PAC about playing-time preferences.

It all depends on Cal's AD and if she's scared of Larry Scott, that's all. If not, she'll plead Cal's case for night games for the reasons given in above posts.

Oregon is attractive to the networks with the evening kickoffs (which is often ABC or Fox) because they've won the last two conference titles and they continue to be a Top 10 ranked team.

The Arizona schools are a special case for safety reasons. When the schedule moves into November and the Arizona weather cools, then it becomes possible for afternoon kickoffs in Tucson or Tempe.

Simply not true. Larry Scott doesn't set kickoffs; TV execs set kickoffs. But I will agree that night games have their own cachet. And I would like to see more of them in September and October when the weather is sometimes warm after sunset in the Bay Area.

Surely Larry Scott can talk to the TV Execs in Cal's behalf after he himself has been addressed by Cal's AD.

Maybe the AD can use "Indian Summer" as a reason to move all games to night.

If not going to the Commish, I assume the AD would be still one in the position to convey that reason (or similar) to the TV folks.

I like a mix.

With 2 small children, night games are a deal breaker for our family. Plus, I love waking early and getting into Berkeley in the am under blue skies and sunshine.

Best part about night games?

Pisses the Panoramic Hill people off EVEN MORE!

If we can ever get a 9 p.m. start that would be the best ;-)

"Indian Summer" doesn't trump 100+ degrees in the desert.

Yes, surely Larry Scott can talk to the TV execs. But Larry Scott doesn't make the decision. There are 12 schools in the Pac-12. Cal doesn't dominate the conference.

Yeah, a Big Game in October makes it loud and clear that Cal is the PAC-12's whipping boy.

Actually, LSU plays a vast majority of their he games at night. It is their preference unless TV requirements get in the way. The opposing team having to go into that stadium at night after those coonasses have been drinking outside for 12+ hours is very tough. They are 46-1 at home at night the past 9+ years.....

Even on days that end up being sunny, Berkeley is often foggy and cold in the AM.

I do think a 2 or 3 PM start works pretty well--best weather window, plenty of time to get to Berkeley including those with kids who have Saturday morning activities or those coming up from L.A., time to eat and drink and enjoy the pre-game on Sproul, watch the early games on TV from a bar, plus the game is over in time to still hang out in Berkeley, get a few beers, have dinner or get home in time to get cleaned up for other Saturday night plans.

Evenings such as the UCLA game are great.

On the other hand, we took our three kids to all the home games from 1994-2011. Games with 7pm starts on a 45-degree rainy November night are tough on families with kids.
