Completely OT but I know there are so many smart people here (along with a decent number of doctors)

Experiencing an allergic reaction to Amoxicillin. WORST rash in my life (and I have had some horrid ones with Poison Oak). ALL over Torso (front and back) and a decent amount on Arms and Legs, neck and Scalp.

Urgent care today gave me.

- Epi shot today to make sure I wasn't experiencing close airways
- Steriods Shot (don't know which)
- 60 mgs of Predsidone which they wanted me to start tommorow but when I called said move up to today
- Benadryl every 4 hours.

MAYBE getting some relief from the Predidone. MAYBE. But rash is still killing me.

Anything else to ask for if I go back to see them tommorrow? It truly sucks Furd eggs.

That about covers it. Just trying to prevent anaphylactic shock. From now on don't take any of the " cillins" i.e. Amoxicillin, penecillin, ampicillin. In dentistry, we would give you clindamycin as second drug of choice. Take care

I am sure because it is complicated but a drug company that could come up with a good anti-itch pill could pave its parking lot in solid gold.

I had the same issue. I feel bad for you -- it truly is hell. I was itching so bad I couldn't fall asleep. i felt like crying....

You have to just wait it out. The best thing I did was take colloidal oatmeal baths. It stopped ghe itching temporarily.

They covered you for everything. Just try to go to sleep so you can avoid thinking about the itch. Watch out for cephalosporins too in the future. Risk for cross reactivity is roughly 5-10%.

Where's OskiMD when you need him? Maryland?

I guess MD's don't have time to read BI. Saving lives and golfing are full time pursuits. Feel better SoCal. That sucks.

You might try downloading an anti-itch hypnosis mp3?

Not vouching for this site, but:
LINK

At the very least it might help you sleep.

When my oldest daughter was 5 she had the chicken pox, I hypnotized her and completely eliminated her itching.

Just asked the wife. Like Dave said, you just need to wait for it to clear your blood stream.

Just keep the benadryll on hand.

Diphenhydramine is a beautiful drug. Aka Benadryl. The liquid or fast-sorb children's varieties are the best for rapid action short of an IV. Not only can it help your press ant case, but can help you be foggy in the second half when necessary!

Socalietownie, I wish you a quick recovery. Obtaining any medical advice on the internet is probably not appropriate.

I have the same allergy... any "cillin". Amoxicillin kicked my a$$ once and now I am sure to mention the whole any "cillin" problem ALWAYS. Unfortunately, most everyone is correct, just wait out the itch... it goes away eventually.

Dentist Dave is also correct, clindamycin is often a good alternative. But as molecular bear points out, let your Doc do the diagnosin'. Best of luck and phu<k "cillin".

I hope you're doing better today. Med reactions are not fun. Sounds like you're already on a reasonable medication course. I agree with previous posters re waiting for the steroid to kick in. The only thing I would add is to make sure you're taking a good dose of the Benadryl, 50 mg every 6 hrs, if you're not already. Sounds like as an adult with severe itching, for you 25 mg prob is less effective. Good luck.

As for the itching....Benadryl and then topical stuff. Oatmeal baths. Caladryl. Etc...you gotta ride it out. For the future cross reactivity with cephalosporins is stated at 5-10% though in practice it's probably lower. Clindamicin is reasonable but it is associated with C. difficile colitis.

Yes. I don't give Clindimycin if there are any ulcer/colon issues due to ulcerative colitis issues. Clindimycin is our second drug of choice due to It's specificity to bacteria in the oral arena. Other parts of the body may use something else. Hopefully this is your last episode

How soon after starting your amox did your symptoms develop?

Have you taken it or similar before?

I had the same thing but not half as bad as what you're describing. Took a bunch of benadryl and it went away after a couple days.

What is your prednisone regime?
In other words, how much and for how long?

Doing the Benedryl thing - 50 mg every four hours
they have me on 60 mgs of Pedrison for five days

I was just posting to see if there was anything else folks had been RXed. All to easy for providers to follow the standard regime and send you on their way - they are not looking like a lobster and iching like mad ;-) Things seem to be a bit better today - still itch like mad on the torso but at least arms and legs seem both less itchy and less inflamed.

Oh and the allergic reaction kicked in 6 days after starting amox. Research suggests that it not uncommon. I guess the body just gets overwhelmed trying to fight off what it is seeing as a foregin body.

First, i'm not saying you aren't, but I have had two patients get a reaction well into the course of amox treatment. Turned out each one was having a reaction to something other than the antibiotic. One was from clams...they had been eating them all their life and never suspected them; and the other was a new washing soap.

Prednisone is pretty harsh and usually has a tapered down dose (60, 50, 40 , 30, 20, 10, 0) you might inquire about that.

Also, not sure if you are male or female, but there are reported cases where birth control pills were ineffective while accompanied by antibiotics.....especially rifampin, but has been reported with penicillin.

But I suppose the big rash and itch might be a good method of birth control...at least for the short term

Good Luck!
Cheers!

A) Am A guy
B) We haven't introduced anything new into the household (that at least I can figure out)
C) I agree about the lack of tapering. I may go back and ask about that.

1) Prednisone is a nasty mean drug. Good you're only on it 5 days. Crap ass side effects.
2) Sometimes with antibiotics, you can take it a few times and have a slight to no symptoms, then the next time Boom!!! I am sure they told you that you could have gotten a restricted airway and not be here. So, an itch is slighly better than that. Hope you are not allergic to chocolate!!!

Is this the first time you took antibiotics or the first reaction to it?

It doesn't have to be new. In fact a severe reaction usually occurs after multiple exposures. Have you taken a "cillin" before? In the case of the clams, my patient was in her late 60's, grew up on Oregon coast. Dug clams and had clam bakes for most of her life.
Moved down to the bay area, got a tooth infection, got an abx rx from me, got a bag of clams that day or the next from Costco and cooked them up. Got the reaction and figured it was the amox since her dinner guest put the idea in her head (daughter in law knew she was on amox and also had an allergy to amox). A few days later, after the reaction cleared, she had clam chowder and reacted again.Turns out, she can have amox, just can't have any more clams.

Cheers!!!
