The Bear would not quit? What?!

:facepalm

OK, so Channel 5 promoted a segment tonight saying that they've uncovered a bunch of previously unseen footage from the 1982 Big Game. Cool, I thought, so I recorded it and posted it here:

Unfortunately they only showed a few seconds of the rare footage, like the E.T. card stunt, and a few brief moments in the locker room (Edit: more footage was indeed posted; see link below). However they did show the moment I was hoping to see: Joe Kapp uttering his famous post Big Game declaration. But...

The version I hear a lot that I've always thought was a mistake is:

The Bear will not quit.
The Bear will not die.

I've always remembered it as:

The Bear does not quit.
The Bear will not die.

I've always thought this was a more powerful statement, and my memory was backed up when I found this picture of the 1984 football yearbook:

So imagine my surprise when I saw/heard the real quote (see video). The actual quote is something I had never heard before. I'm glad the quote morphed from what the Bear wouldn't do to a more generalized statement, but it was a little jarring to hear.

I wish KPIX would release all the halftime and post-game footage online, now that would be cool. Oh my other comment is that I didn't like that they cropped the top and bottom of the video to fill out the widescreen format. Anyway, there are a few good previously unseen moments to see, so check it out.

EDIT: OK, thanks to run2win, it turns out they did indeed post some raw footage online, and I have compiled those videos here:

I was in the card section that day. We rocked. Check out those crisp, smooth transitions. This is the first time I've ever seen footage of card stunts that I participated in at Cal. #GoBears

I don't think the '82 big game was the original source of that quote. Joe was just trying to say, "in this game, the bear would not quit . . ."

Steve Kroner was a classmate, and I knew him a bit professionally over the years-great guy. Despite him being a Furd, you gotta love how Gary has embraced his 15 seconds of fame!
I've been around alums involved with the Ohio St./Michigan rivalry, and the Alabama/Auburn rivalry, and sat through many conversations about which is best(including other rivalries), and all of that-a lot of beer consumed, and a lot of fun talk. Be it because of the success the teams have had relative to Cal-Furd, The Big Game just isn't in the same breath for most folks. But, when you take a step back, there might be last second FG's, TD's to win the game, and the like in the other rivalries, but The Play simply puts The Big Game into its own class...

Thanks for posting that.

I've always wanted to hear the Barry Tompkins version of the play, or any non-Joe Starkey versions.

Too bad John Elway isn't participating this year.

He was available for the 25th anniversary, even taking part in filming a special.

But Elway actually has a big-time job now, so he's too busy.

This is not a slam on you so dont take it the wrong way (I'm just starting to get fired up for the game)----but I could give a rats ass what "most folks" across the country think about The Big Game. This is our rivalry with our traditions and our upsets and big plays. I'll never but The Big Game on a second tier or below any other rivalry game in the country. (Not saying you were in your post).

Thanks for posting this TTAI82.

I read somewhere BG historians are aching to identify the soon to be joyous tan jacket and pants cal guy (carrying a small blue daypack) leaning into the ref's post game parlay, whose face is seen fairly close up here about the 3:15 mark.

Three decades later, darn, he still hasn't been found.

.. other personal accounts explain how the phrase Joe made famous was whispered in his ear by an assistant coach very shortly before its delivery.

I've still got the Tompkins feed on videotape, umm, somewhere, as does OldenBear in Cybears' video archive (iirc).

The voice of Cal's weekly highlight show blew it. Even as the play continued to roll he decided the game was over, (paraphrased) fugitaboutit.

Guessing, that's why he didn't return to do the highlight gig the next season.

Also, it would be cool to hear the Stanfurd radio broadcast.

Exactly. He didn't coin the phrase but got credit for it. He repeated it from an assistant.

No, you are right. The folks tailgating at Harvard/Yale or even Bates/Bowdoin I agree are totally wrapped up in their moments as well. The Big Game will continue to be great, even if I have to watch it from Center City Philadelphia! But I would love a year when the winner of The Big Game is playing for a rose Bowl berth...okay, that can't happen, but playing for a spot in the championship game, or maybe both teams undefeated? A "next step" wish, not taking away from the greatness that it is, only adding to it...

Understood. Didnt we knock Stanford out of RB contention with our 2009 victory at Palo Alto?

Mathematically, no, since Oregon would have gone because they had only one conference loss at season's end compared to the two that Furd would have had.
