Everyone seemed to bag on this guy for being a poor student (not taking QB abilities into account), etc...just curious, anyone know if he is still at school working towards his diploma? Any chances he won't lower our APR score? Or is he now just a member of his brother's entourage?

It would make me so happy/proud to see Twitter pics of Zach graduating in May. For all the abuse he's taken on this board (and I admit some myself), ultimately he would be accomplishing something worth more than anything he's ever done or not done on the field, IMO. Get after it Zach and finish strong.

Sure hope he does. We need the APR point.

I don't know if ZM is still on campus, but it's likely he's hanging with KA who is preparing for the NFL draft.

As long as ZM leaves school eligible to play, he doesn't count against our APR. If he passed fall classes, he will not count against APR. If he failed them, he would count against APR if he indeed has withdrawn. Same is true for any player who leaves after the fall semester, in fact.

I'm not sure what happens if a player enrolls for spring semester and then withdraws midway through after being drafted.... but I'd think most draftable players get an agent ASAP and don't take classes. Even if they think they might coming back to finish the degree in the future, putting in a few months of hard combine specific training is a big plus.

After reading this thread, I decided to check the Berkeley directory.

Keenan isn't in there.

The subject of this thread, OTOH, is.

I have no idea if he's still attending, but he's in the directory.

might as well graduate, otherwise why go to all the extra tutoring sessions

uh, maybe to be eligible for fall football?

Would be great to see ZM graduate from Cal. Hate to be a nega here, but I think it's questionable if that ever happens.

As much as I disliked ZM's play for us, kid needs to graduate from Cal. You cant follow your brother's coattail for the rest of your life.

If he gets that degree, Ill quit my ZM negativity. I mean I can't hate on a guy who came to Cal NOT JUST to be an athlete but a student as well.

I doubt it, but maybe Zach gets his act together and hits the Doe stacks hard core for a couple of semesters and pulls out a degree in -- oh, who am I kidding. Good luck in KA's entourage Zach...

Graduate from Cal (and we will help you get there): Successful life, probably

Don't graduate: Your future's up in the air and you'll regret not seizing the opportunity

Why the haters here? ZM is part of our Cal family. I wish him the best.

No need to post unfair, very negative comments about young student-athletes. It's happened way to much IMHO and it only belittles posters that cannot seem to refrain from the joy of anonymously trying to crush players' abilities but often their character as well.

seriously, its god damn pathetic how some of you hate on ZM day in and day out, kid wasnt a great qb but this crap gets excessive. people get up in arms over some questioning why we took a slow, 2 star wr, because it might be seen by recruits and their parents but ragging on a player day in and day out is cool tho!

^This.

Obviously football isn't going to work out for him. I'd sure hope he gets his degree and has a happy life.

I have nothing against Maynard for being who he is. My beef was with the coach for doing such a poor job at developing QB talent, not for ZM for trying his best and not being very good. And with the coach gone, I'm done with all that. This hating on players (or in this case students) is disturbing.

you are asking a lot for this site. Constant negativity = critical thinking in to many people's minds on this site. Very unfortunate for supposed representatives of our University.

He is listed as one of the players scheduled for Pro Day at CMS. You would think CAL would not allow non students on the field. However his brother is also listed to attend and someone said that he was no longer enrolled. It's pretty obvious that the best he could do in pro football is the AFL.

No, those people are the perfect representatives for Cal....lol.

Whininess + losing history = wiener fanbase

I think you give too much credit when you associate "Constant negativity = critical thinking". One is emotional (constant negativity) while one is logical (critical thinking) and implies the usage of brains. Therefore, I think it's the former (constant negativity = emotional) more than the latter.

While I hate to see people ripping these kids for their athletic performances (not Zach's fault JT stuck with him) this kid never belonged at Cal academically.

Unfortunately, he is no longer associated with the university.

Yes, that's what this is all about really. Not "ripping" kids but being realistic about the non-academic inclination of some of the players and the low likelihood of their ever graduating.

Does predicting that, say, Leon Powe for example, will never get his degree mean that you're attacking a player? No, it does not...

Why not use Aaron Rodgers as your example? Both Leon Powe and Aaron Rodgers were only in college for 3 years and left early for a pro career. Predicting that someone who left school early and has a pro career on the other side of the country will not get his degree is a lot different than making assumptions about a player that you know very little about. Or was there something about Powe that you think he has in common with Maynard that lead you to make that comparison?

They are making up stories about him based on their own negative assumptions and then state them as fact. Par for the course.

Aaron was only here 3 semesters right? We have no idea how he did academically but we know that unlike guys like Cam Newton and Vince Young, Aaron still hasn't come back to get his degree.

These posts are really beneath contempt. The really disgusting level of vehement misplaced anger here is shocking. Maynard and Allen are both alumni and they've both shed more blood, sweat and tears for our university than most of us ever have. Show a little respect. If not for them, yourself.

I'm a Cal grad, no tutoring, and, if needed, no chance of a missed session.

He was here to play football with his talented brother. Period.

Better days are here

I'd get worked up about posts like OskiMD's, but he's proven himself such a despicable person so many times that I've tried to just ignore it. Good post, NYC.
