According to the Cal Rugby Twitter page, Cal has defeated Notre Dame 77-0 to advance to the next round of the national Varsity Cup Championship. 13 tries were scored by 10 Bears. Looks like some nice contributions from some of the younger players too. If Cal gets a high enough seed, they will host one more game next weekend in Berkeley. Looking forward to the full report on CalBears.com. This team is just awesome.

Caught my first ever rugby game. Luckily I had a South African sitting next to me to explain the rules. There were a few hundred Cal fans enjoying the game. Cal just kept getting stronger as the game went on. There were some really great plays at the end of the game.

Go Bears

Yeah, hopefully enough differential to earn a home field game at Witter before moving on to Provo. The Domers are an even worse rugby team than the team we faced a Memorial in the '60s for the "National Championship".

Roll on you Bears.................

Down here, BYU took apart UCla 69-8. Also Central Washington beat the Air Force Academy handily as well. Haven't seen CWU play, but I would never have expected the AFA to go down as big as they did. BYU......very big, strong, and they play defense the same way Cal does. If you switched jerseys (at least defensively) you wouldn't know the difference. UCla just couldn't get anything going offensively, and BYU appeared to be much more organized and is very well conditioned. Cal usually wins the second half, but if they end up playing the Cougars for the championship, it will be a very hard fought, physical game. So we get Navy at Witter next Saturday while BYU plays CWU in Provo. My two favorite teams in Blue and Gold next Saturday...... Navy is no stranger to the Bears, and they will play with the traditional intensity that service academies always have in rugby. It will be an honor to have them in Berkeley, and I hope the crowd is big, classy, and appreciative of what Cal and Navy have accomplished this year. It will be a great afternoon at Witter!

That game was hilarious. We won something like 49-3, but we could have named the score. They didn't even know the rules.

Sports Illustrated had been touting them as the Number One team in the country. Not a peep from SI after we reported the score, though.

Thanks for the notice. Here's what the website has to say of the match:

My biggest relief was that we were able to travel across country and play a lot of reserves to provide a comfortable margin at the half. Hearing about UCLA's big loss to BYU portends for an exciting NC game in Provo next month.

IIRC that was right after the Domer gridiron team whomped the Bear Football team. Justice was served.

I recall the score was 33 to 3 but some of my best memories are warped by time. Also, I thought the Cal vs ND game made the cover of SI the next week.

Any old farts with clearer memories please contribute.
